Re-viewing the War Inside Out: On Clint Eastwood’s Two Films on the Battle of Iwo Jima Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, Clint Eastwood’s two 2006 films, tell the stories of soldiers who fought, struggled, and lost their comrades-in-arms in the Battle of Iwo Jima during the Second World War. Flags of Our Fathers attempts to redefine the notion of war hero by showing post-traumatic sufferings of three surviving soldiers who were acclaimed as war heroes by their flag raising act on Iwo Jima which was captured and spread to American public in an iconic snapshot. As the son of John “Doc” Bradley clarifies in the last scene of his John’s death, heroism must function as an essential way of remembering the fellow soldiers who sacrificed their life for their buddies rather than as a triumphant means of national ideology. In this sense, the idyllic scene of soldiers’ swimming on the shore of Iwo Jima at the end of the film delivers the true meaning of human compassion that the soldiers wanted to grasp during and after the cruel battle. On the other hand, Letters from Iwo Jima deals with how the value of honor for a soldier can be incorporated with the value of humanity for a man. General Kuribayashi, the overall commander of Japanese garrison who is doomed to sacrifice all the soldiers in the battle, not only wants to keep his honor and dignity as a general of the Imperial Japanese Army by unconquerable spirit of fighting back against American Army, but also wants to cherish all the sorrows that the tragic battle yielded for his soldiers and their families. Viewed from Eastwood’s attempt to redefine the meaning of hero and honor, both films performs the overturning of national heroic fantasies and myths about war, and thereby, they offer a critical way of re-viewing the war inside out.
