초록

이 논문은 <제48대 경문대왕>조를 텍스트의 안과 밖의 조응을 참조하여 응렴(경문왕)이라는 한 인물의 이야기로 읽어 본연의 의미를 탐색해본 것이다.
첫째, ‘임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀’를 중심으로 이 조목을 읽어내는 방법은 세 가지이다. 먼저 ‘임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀’가 있는 서사단락만 떼어내서 읽어내면, 숨기려는 자와 밝히려는 자의 대립 구도 속에서 후자의 승리로 귀결된다. 다음으로, 응렴이 왕이 되는 과정에서부터 ‘임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀’까지를 연결된 서사로 읽어내면, 임금 자리에 오르기 어려운 인물이 임금이 되면서 겪는 문제가 ‘뱀’과 ‘당나귀 귀’의 두 갈래로 생겨난 것이다. 끝으로, 화랑들이 모여서 노래를 지어 임금에게 바친 대목까지를 연결해 읽어내면 임금으로서 행해야할 이상적인 통치 방식에 대한 논의까지로 이어진다.
둘째, 전체 조목을 여섯 개의 단락으로 나누어 그 의미를 해석해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째 단락에서 헌안왕과 응렴의 대화를 통해 헌안왕과 응렴의 사람됨을 엿보게 해주는데, 헌안왕이 찾던 인물상과 응렴의 사람됨이 정확히 일치한다. 둘째 단락에서 임금의 제안을 받은 이후 응렴의 처신이 조망되는데, 실제로 응렴은 여러 사람들의 의견에 따라 흔들리는 모습을 보인다. 셋째 단락에서는 응렴은 자신의 실리를 따라 전략적으로 배필을 정함으로써 앞서 내세웠던 이상적인 인물상과 거리를 보인다. 넷째 단락에서 임금의 침전에 뱀들이 모여들어 자유로운 소통을 방해함으로서, 어렵게 왕위에 올라 맞게 된 고립성을 대변하다. 다섯째 단락에서 임금의 귀가 당나귀 귀처럼 변하는데, 이는 여러 의견들을 좇는 부동성(浮動性)을 의미한다. 여섯째 단락에서 화랑들이 모여 노래를 만들고 그 노래를 일정한 절차를 거쳐 임금이 들을 수 있게 하였다.
<제48대 경문대왕>은 임금이 되기 어려운 인물이 임금이 되어 생긴 부작용을 ‘뱀’과 ‘당나귀 귀’로 상징적으로 보여준 후 그것을 넘어서는 이상적인 방안을 제시함으로써, 어려운 문제를 간단한 지혜로 해결해내는 보통의 지략담 이상의 의미를 지닌다.

영어초록

This paper inquired into a proper meaning of <the 48th Gyeongmun>subchapters through the reading of them as a story about a person named Eungryeom(King Gyeongmun) by referring to the correspondence between the inside and outside of the text.
First, there are three sorts of methods of reading these items with ‘the King has Donkey Ears’ as a center. The first method is to read by picking out only the narrative paragraph which includes ‘The King has Donkey Ears’, and in this case, in the midst of a conflict composition between the one who tries to hide and the other who tries to reveal, it boils down to the victory of the latter.
Next, the second method is to read the part from the process, in which Eungryeom becomes a king, to ‘The king has Donkey ears’ as a connected narrative, and in this case, the problem suffered by the person, for whom it was difficult to rise to the throne, after he became a king, emerged as two parts-‘A Snake’ and ‘Donkey Ears.’ The last third method is to connect even with the part, in which Hwarang(chivalrous warriors) of Silla gathered to make songs, and made an offering of the songs to the King, and the part is linked even to discussions about the ideal governing style which should be put into practice as a king.
Second, the interpretation of the meaning by dividing all items into six paragraphs is as follows: The first paragraph makes it possible for readers to get a glimpse of the personality of King Heonan and Eungryeom through their conversation; here, the right person King Heonan was looking for, and the personality of Eungryeom correspond exactly In the second paragraph, after receiving the King’s proposal, Eungryeom’s behavior is surveyed, and actually, Eungryeom shows a wavering appearance according to many people’s opinion.
In the third paragraph, Eungryeom showed a gap with an ideal right person set forth previously by strategically deciding his spouse based on his practical interests. In the fourth paragraph, snakes gathered at the bedroom in a royal place, and interrupted free communication, representing the isolation he faced after rising to the throne with difficulty. In the fifth paragraph, the King’s ears changed into the ones like a donkey ears, which, contrary to the previous paragraph, means Eungryeom’s floating properties of following various opinions here and there. In the sixth paragraph, Hwarang gathered to make songs and got the King to hear the songs through a certain procedure; here, the King hinted at his ambitions and determination as a king by showing the rejoicing appearance.
<The 48th King Gyeongmun> shows the meaning of more than a resource talk like finding a solution to a tricky problem with the simple wisdom by suggesting an ideal plan going over the side effects after symbolically showing the side effects caused when a person, for whom it was difficult to rise to the throne, became a king as ‘Snake’ and ‘Donkey Ears.’
