초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the raison d’être of the liberal arts as a major in Korean universities. This is to question, apart from its contribution to liberal education, whether the Korean liberal arts education as a departmental major meets the so-called demand of the present Korean society. As the main aim of the undergraduate major education in Korean universities is to help undergraduates to prepare for their future careers in society, this paper argues, the Korean liberal arts education as a departmental major has failed badly, because it has failed to meet the social demands of current Korean society by providing only humanistic accomplishments that should be developed in liberal education. This paper contends that, to survive as a major, the Korean liberal arts department should change itself into a discipline where collective intelligence can flourish through the adoption of the rapidly developing web technology as well as into a discipline that can operate as a platform for consilience and convergence in university education. This paper suggests that, to transform itself into a major that can educate undergraduates in line with social demand, Korean liberal arts departments should introduce new educational courses, such as media literacy courses, courses that stimulate the operation of collective intelligence, and team teaching courses in which specialists from various disciplines participate, and so on.
