계봉우와 미하일 朴의 한국학: 근현대사 서술을 중심으로 해서 (Korean Studies by Kye Pong’u and Mikhail Pak: Focused on Their Descriptions of Korea’s Modern History)

초록

계봉우는 미하일 박보다 윗세대에 속했다. 미하일 박은, 비록 독립운동과 유관한 가정에서 태어났지만, 직접적으로는 정치운동과 관련이 없었던 데 반해, 계봉우는 역사와 문학, 언어학을 아울렀던 문사이면서도 걸출한 독립운동가였다. 조선사에 대한 유물론적인 서술이라는 과제를 계봉우는 미하일 박보다 훨씬 더 일찍, 이미 1930년대에 안게 됐고, 그 고민의 결과물인 <조선역사>의 원고는 미하일 박에게도 차후 중요한 참고가 됐다. 계봉우의 조선사 서술과 미하일 박의 초기(1950년대 초반) 조선사 서술을 비교하면, 후자는 전자의 영향을 상당히 받은 것으로 보인다. 그러나 거시적으로 볼 때에 계봉우와 미하일 박의 관계는 단순히 영향을 주고받은 관계라기보다는 같은 고민, 즉 마르크스-레닌주의적인 조선사 해석을 안고 있었던 선후배 내지 동지의 관계라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 둘 다 이와 같은 과제를 수행하기 위해서 근대시기의 민중의 반봉건 반제 투쟁을 강조했으며, 또 둘 다 이와 함께 그 투쟁의 대상인 식민지 권력과 일본, 조선 유산 계급을 일차적으로 ‘수탈자’로 규정했다. 이는 일면으로 1960년대 이후의 남한 학계의 ‘수탈론’과 상통하는 문맥이기도 한데, ‘민족’을 단위로 하는 남한의 ‘수탈론’과 달리 계봉우와 미하일 박의 ‘수탈론’은 일차적으로 계급적 관계를 가리켰으며, 그 만큼 민족주의가 비판의 대상이 되는 오늘날에 훨씬 적합하기도 한다. 일면으로는, 민족주의적 독립운동에 투신한 바도 있었던 계봉우는 미하일 박에 비해서 종교적 계몽운동이라든가 일부 유산계급의 독립운동에의 기여 등에 대해 훨씬 더 적극적인 평가를 하는 등 미하일 박의 서술과 뉘앙스적 차별성도 보인다.

영어초록

Kye Pong’u(1880~1956) belonged to an older generation than MikhailPak(1918~2009). Despite the family connections with the anti-Japanese independencemovement, Mikhail Pak was more of a “pure” academic, and, with the exceptionof the Soviet-Korean movement after the late 1980s, was not personally involvedin the political movements. By contrast, Kye Pong’u was a noted independencemovement activist - in addition to being a “universal” Korea scholar, who combinedhistorical, philological and literary interests in his work. Much earlier than MikhailPak, already in the 1930s, Kye Pong’u defined a “materialistic” re-interpretationof Korean history as his scholarly task. His manuscript, Chosŏn Yŏksa(KoreanHistory), was actually of important reference to Mikhail Pak, who also learnedclassical Chinese from him in the early 1940s. A comparison between Mikhail Pak’searly(beginning of the 1950s) descriptions of Korean modern history and Kye Pong’u’snarrative shows that the latter definitely influenced the former. However, therelationship between the two was not simply of teacher/disciple kind: both Kyeand Pak were sharing the same task, namely giving a “correct” Marxist-Leninist(re)interpretation of Korean history. To do so, both scholars heavily emphasizedthe “anti-feudal and anti-imperialist struggles by the masses” in modern Koreanhistory, and eagerly defined as “purely exploitive” the colonial administration andcolonial-time Japanese/Korean bourgeoisie the “masses” were opposing. The focus on the “colonial exploitation” was not unlike that in the South Korean left-nationalisthistoriography after the 1960s, but, differently from South Korea’s left-nationalisthistorians, Kye and Pak accentuated the exploitation along the class lines ratherthat ethno-national(Japanese vs. Koreans) exploitation. In this way, their logic seemsto be more suitable today, when historiographical nationalism is being criticizedas outmoded. It has also to be noted that Kye Pong’u, who, unlike Mikhail Pak,had first-hand experience of the anti-Japanese nationalist activism(in the 1910s),tended to assess religious or cultural nationalist activities, as well as the role ofsome, more nationalistically inclined groups of the domestic Korean bourgeoisiehigher than Mikhail Pak. The latter’s approach was, in a way, more dogmatic.
