일제강점기 朴寅浩의 천도교활동과 민족운동 (Park In-Ho’s activities in the Cheondo religion and his racial movement during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea)

초록

박인호는 1905년 이후, 교단에서 교장, 고문, 금융관장, 경도사, 차도
주에 이어 1908년 제4대 교주가 되었다. 교주가 되면서 박인호는 교단의
중앙조직을 개편하였다. 교단 개편은 교당의 이전과 교구증설, 조직개
편, 규칙개편으로 진행되었다. 조직개편은 중앙총부가 자리를 잡기 위한
노력이었으며, 규칙개편은 천도교로 개편된 후 불안했던 조직을 안정화
시키기 위한 노력이었다. 이 같은 과정을 통해 교단이 안정을 되찾자,
박인호는 교육문화운동을 진행하였다. 1908년에 교리강습소를 전국적으
로 설립하여 수천 명의 교역자를 양성하였으며, 여성포덕과 교육에도
힘썼다. 이렇게 배출된 교인들이 천도교 발전의 근간이 되었으며 나아
가 3·1운동에서 주도적인 역할을 하였다. 박인호는 교단 안에서의 교육
운동을 밖으로 확대시켜야 한다고 생각하였다. 그리하여 경제적인 어려
움을 겪고 있던 동덕여학교 등 일곱 개의 학교를 인계하여 관리하였으
며, 이밖에도 교리서 발간과 교리강습소 운영, 기관지 발간 등을 활발하
게 진행하였다.
박인호의 이러한 활동으로 교단이 안정을 되찾게 되자 민족운동에 직
접 참여하였다. 먼저 3·1운동을 전개하기 위한 자금으로 세 차례에 걸
쳐 총 6만 5천 원을 지원하였으며, 윤익선과 함께 독립선언발표의 원고
를 작성하기도 하였다. 또한 3·1운동으로 교단의 재산이 일본에 압수되
자 강계교구모금운동을 진행하여 독립운동 자금을 제공하였다. 이러한
활동으로 박인호는 1년 8개월간의 옥고를 치뤘다. 이밖에도 박인호는
조카 박래원이 주도적으로 참여한 6·10만세운동에 필요한 제반 지원을
보조하였으며, 1927년에는 아들인 박래홍을 비롯한 교인들을 신간회에
참여시켰다. 그는 지병이 악화되어 활동이 자유롭지 않음에도 불구하고
1938년에는 자신의 마지막 민족운동인 멸왜기도운동을 전개하였다.
멸왜기도운동은 교인들의 정신적인 결합을 도모하기 위하여 식고문
을 아침, 저녁을 먹을 때마다 시행하는 계획, 구파의 국권회복의 기회에
대비한 특별희사금모집 계획, 독립을 기원하는 강한 의지를 담고 있는
멸왜기도문으로 특별 기도를 실시하는 세 가지 계획으로 진행되었다.
이 운동은 박인호의 지시에 의해 황해도에서 시작되어 전국적으로 확대
된 가장 종교적인 민족운동의 하나로서, 박인호가 참여하였던 동학농민
전쟁과 3·1운동의 맥락과 이어지는 구국운동이었다.

영어초록

Park In-Ho held various posts in succession like the principal of a
school, adviser, financial director, Gyeongdosa (a position in the
organization of the Cheondo religion) and Chadojoo (a position in the
organization of the Cheondo religion) after 1905 and then he became the
4th leader of the Cheondo religion in 1908. As he became the leader, he
reorganized the central system of the Cheondo order. The reorganization of
the Cheondo order included the removal of the chapel, the establishment of
more parishes, system and rule reform in succession. System reform was
accomplished to make the central general office put down its roots in the
organization and rule reform was for stabilizing the organization after
changing to the Cheondo religion from Donghak. As the Cheondo order
stabilized through the course of its reorganization, he started education and
culture campaign. He established many institutes giving courses of doctrines
of the Cheondo religion all over the county and trained thousands of
religious workers, and concentrated his efforts on missionary work and
education for women.
The believers produced by this course became the foundation of the
development of the Cheondo religion, and furthermore they played a
leading role in the Samil Independence Movement. he thought that
education campaign within the Cheondo order should be extended to the
outside world. Therefore he took over and managed 7 schools including
Dongdeok Girl’s School which had financial troubles. In addition, he
actively published the books on doctrines of the Cheondo religion, operated
institutes giving courses of its doctrines and published a journal of the
Cheondo religion.
As the Cheondo order stabilized by his activities, he directly participated
in the racial movement. First of all, he donated 65,000 Won over 3 times
for the Samil Independence Movement and used to redact a draft of the
declaration of independence with Ik-Seon Yoon. As the property of the
Cheondo order was confiscated by Japan, he started a campaign for
subscription in Ganggye parish and donated funds for the independence
movement. Because of such activities, he groaned in prison for 1 year and
8 months. Besides, he supported his nephew, Rae-Won Park who played a
leading role in the 6·10 Hurrah Movement and helped him with his
necessary things, and he made his son, Rae-Hong Park, and other believers
participate in Shinganhoi. Though it was difficult for him to be active due
to his chronic disease aggravation, he started the Prayer Movement to ruin
Japan in 1938, which was his last racial movement.
The prayer movement to ruin Japan progressed according to 3 plans, that
is, a plan to offer a prayer at the time of breakfast and dinner and a plan
to raise special funds to provide for the opportunity of the recovery of
national rights, and a plan to offer a special prayer to ruin Japan. This
movement was one of the most religious racial movements which started in
Hwanghae Province under the instructions of Park In-Ho and spread all
over the country and a save-the-nation movement connected with the
Donghak Peasant War and the Samil Independence Movement in which
Park In-Ho had participated.
