바왕가마음의 모든 마음 공통심소와 아뢰야식의 변행심소 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study of Common Mental Factors in Bhavaṅga-citta and Universal Mental Factors in Ālaya-vijñāna)

초록

바왕가마음(bhavaṅga-citta)의 모든 마음의 공통된 심소(sabba-cit- ta-sādhāraṇa cetasika)와 아뢰야식阿賴耶識의 변행심소는 유사점이 있 다. 기본적으로두개념의촉觸, 작의作意, 수受, 상想, 사思의총 다섯가 지항목은서로공통점이있으나, 바왕가마음은삼매三昧와명근命根이 별도로 있다. 아뢰야식은 이를 별경심소로 분류하였다.
두 개념의 공통점은 생의 시작과 끝을 담당하며, 가장 근원적으로 신체를 유지하는 기능을 담당한다는 점이다. 즉, 각 심소들의 활동을 통해 근원적인 식의 활동을 설명하려 했다는 점은 일치한다.
바왕가마음과 아뢰야식의 활동은 미세하지만 근원적으로 윤회를 해명하는 가장 중요한 개념이다. 특히 바왕가마음은 윤회를 설명하는 원리로서 개념이 발달되었고, 아뢰야식은 윤회의 해명과 더불어 수행 의 측면까지 확장되어 개념이 발달되었다.
두개념의차이점은크게두가지로구분된다. 첫째, 인식의측면에서 바왕가마음이단순히잠재의식으로서업을상속하고인식사이를잇는 소극적 역할에 머무른다면, 아뢰야식은 ‘종자種子’의 저장고이자 모든 식의토대가되어현행식이세계를투사하는능동적작용의토대역할을 한다. 특히 아뢰야식에서 변행심소의 작용을 여러 각도에서 추론해 볼 수있다. 둘째, 수행론적측면에서바왕가마음은단순히신체유지와 다음 생을 위한 선업 축적에 초점을 맞춘다면, 아뢰야식은 현생에서즉각적 깨달음의 가능성을 제시하며, 구체적인 정화의 대상이 되어 동아시아의 여래장이나 진여사상으로 개념이 확대되었다. 이는 초기∙ 부파불교에서 대승불교 사상으로 발전하면서, 학파의 성격에 따라 혹은 시대의 흐름에 따라 식의 기능이 변천되었음이 확인된다.

영어초록

Similarities exist between the common mental factors (sabba-citta-sādhāraṇa cetasika) in the concept of bha- vaṅga-citta and universal mental factors (sarvatra-caitasa) in the concept of ālaya-vijñāna. Fundamentally, while the five ele- ments of contact, attention, feeling, perception, and volition are common to both mental factors, bhavaṅga-citta distinctly includes the concentration and life faculty (jīvitêndriya), and ālaya-vijñāna classifies these two as separate mental factors.
What the two concepts of bhavaṅga-citta and ālaya-vijñāna have in common is that they are responsible for the beginning and end of life, and are most fundamentally responsible for the function of maintaining the body. In other words, they agree in that they attempt to explain the fundamental activity of con- sciousness through the activities of each mental factor.
Although the activities of bhavaṅga-citta and ālaya-vijñāna are subtle, they provide fundamentally important concepts that explain transmigration (saṃsāra). In particular, the concept of bhavaṅga-citta was developed as a principle that explains trans- migration, and the concept of ālaya-vijñāna was developed by expanding it to one’s practice along with an explanation of transmigration.
The differences between the two concepts can be largely div- ided as follows. First, in terms of perception, if the bhavaṅga-cit- ta simply inherits karma as a subconscious tendency and remains in a passive role of connecting perceptions, then ālaya-vijñāna is where “seeds” are stored and is the foundation of all conscious- nesses, acting as the foundation of the active function of the consciousness that creates our world. In particular, the function of the universal mental factors in ālaya-vijñāna can be inferred from various perspectives.
Second, in terms of practice theory, if bhavaṅga-citta simply focuses on maintaining the body and accumulating good karma for the next life, then ālaya-vijñāna suggests the possibility of immediate enlightenment in the present life and becomes a specific object to be purified, expanding the concept to the East Asian concepts of Tathagatagarbha or dharma-nature (bhūtatathatā). This confirms that views on the function of con- sciousness changed according to the nature of the school or the flow of the times as it developed from Early Buddhism, to Sectarian Buddhism and finally to Mahayana Buddhism.
