초록

본 연구에서는 몽골의 창세신화와 주거공간에 나타난 몽골인의 중심에 대한 모형을 통해 몽골인들의 중심에 대한 의식과 세계관을 살펴보았다. 세계중심은 천상, 지상, 지하의 3계가 만나고 소통하는 영적 장소 내지 대상을 이르며, 이곳은 모든 생활 의례의 중심이 된다.
창세신화에서 세계중심은 창조와 확장이 이루어지는 세상의 배꼽으로, 이 중심 지점에서 인간과 동식물의 창조가 이루어진다. 이때 신들의 협력 내지 갈등에 의해 대지가 만들어지고 확장되며, 인간이 창조되고 활동성을 갖게 된다. 이때 등장하는 악귀는 창조에 참여하고도 부당하게 제 몫을 받지 못한 문화영웅으로, 신들의 대립은 선신과 악신의 갈등이라기보다 음양의 역학적 힘을 의미한다고 할 수 있다. 창조가 이루어지는 세계중심은 근원적으로 음양이 조화되고 활동하는 곳으로 풍요와 다산, 번성의 중심이 되는 곳이다.
세계중심은 주거형태로 표현되며, 집의 중심 기둥은 세계의 기둥과 동일시된다. 주거는 위의 출구를 가짐으로써 천상계의 중심인 북극성과 축을 이룬다. 주거에서 가장 중요한 중심은 불이며, 움막 형태의 주거에서 기둥은 ‘불의 신체’(神體)로 중심 역할을 했다. 그러나 주거가 게르로 바뀌고 천창이 중심 역할을 하게 되면서 ‘우르흐’가 중요시 되었다. 불을 놓는 자리인 ‘골롬트’, 그 터가 되는 ‘우르’, 화덕인 ‘톨륵’은 세계중심 및 불과 관련하여 신성시되었다. 기둥신앙이나 불신앙은 모두 조상숭배와 관련된다. 세계중심은 매우 실제적이고 이동과 복제가 가능하며 다원적이다. 또한 천신 내지 조상신들이 거하고 교통하는 곳으로 신앙의 터전이 되면서, 인간 삶의 에너지의 원천이 되는 곳이다. 어떠한 종류의 세계중심도 3계를 아우르는 축의 구조를 가지며, 북극성은 천상의 배꼽이자 기둥으로 세계중심에 중심 역할을 한다. 몽골인들은 생활 속에 영적 공간인 세계중심을 구축함으로 생태적 삶을 구현해 왔다.

영어초록

This study set out to investigate Mongolian people’s perceptions of center and world views through their center model found in the Mongolian world creation myths and residential spaces. The center of the world refers to the spiritual place or object where the three domains of Heaven, ground and underground meet and communication with one another, becoming the center of all life ceremonies.
In world creation myths, the center of the world is the navel of the world where creation and expansion happen along with the creation of man and animals. It is during the period that gods make and expand land, create man, and grant activity to them through their cooperation or conflict. Demons also appear in the period, but they become cultural heroes that do not benefit from their participation in creation, which is unjust. Confrontation between gods is the dynamic power of yin and yang rather than conflict between good and evil deities. The center of the world where creation takes place is the place where yin and yang strike harmony and are active fundamentally and is the center of abundance, fecundity, and prosperity. The navel of land where creation and life activities take place makes an axis with Polaris that is the navel of sky.
The center of the world is depicted in the residence form with the central pillar of house identified with the pillar of the world. The residence have an exit at the top, thus making an axis with Polaris that is the center of celestial world. Fire is the most important center of residence, and the pillars play the central roles as the “sacred object of fire” in mud huts. As residence took the form of Ger, however, hole in the ceiling took the central role, which placed importance on Urkh. It is the cover of ceiling and the sky of Ger, playing the roles of medium between the center of Ger and that of Heaven. “golomt” where the fire was place, “ur” where the lot was located, and “tolga” that was a fire pot were all held sacred for their connections to the center of the world and fire. The faith of pillar and that of fire have something to do with ancestor worship and are connected to goddess more deeply. The center of the world is very real, duplicable, and plural. There is an axial structure of three domains at the center of the world regardless of its types with Polaris serving as the center of center of the world as the navel and hole of Heaven.
