근대전환기 조선인의 메이지(明治) 일본 견문－민건호의 『동행일록(東行日錄)』을 중심으로－ (A trip of Chosun intellectuals to Meiji Japan inthe modern transitional period －Based on the Donghaengilrok by Min Geon-ho)

초록

본고는 조선의 유학 지식인이자 중간 관료였던 민건호(閔建鎬)의 사행 일기인 『동행일록(東行日錄)』을 통해 19세기 근대전환기 조선인의 ‘근대’, ‘일본’ 체험 양상을 살펴보았다. 민건호는 1881년 조사 이헌영의 수행원으로 메이지 일본에 파견되었다. 이들은 과거의 통신사행(通信使行)과는 달리 네크워크화된 교통 수단에 의해 최첨단의 대도시 문화만을 견문하였다. 또한 민건호는 근대 문물을 견문하면서 그 속도와 편리함에 감탄하고 직접 본 것뿐 아니라 들은 것까지 구분하며 자신의 경험을 철저히 기록하고자 시도하였지만, 피상적 관찰과 사실 정보의 나열에만 그쳤고 이를 적극적으로 수용하거나 분석하지는 못하였다. 오히려 최신의 도시 도쿄에 들어가서는 두문불출하거나 조사 이헌영의 견문조차 자세히 기록하지 않는 등 소극적이며 수동적인 태도를 보였다. 결국 그에게 ‘근대’, ‘일본’은 회피하고 싶은 이국(夷國)이었으며, 목욕 풍습 등 풍속의 범주에서는 화이론적 태도까지 견지한다. 하지만 이러한 부정적 인식은 풍습의 차원에만 머물렀으며 서구 문물 자체는 필요불가결하게 판단하였다. 이러한 민건호의 사행은 당대 조선 지식인들이 가졌던 인식들, 즉 전통적 화이관의 지속과 균열 그리고 일본에 가졌던 양가적 시선을 솔직하게 보여주고 있다. 사행중 의식의 불안함은 고국과 가족에 대한 그리움으로 형상화되었고, 때때로 필담·창수와 같은 한학적 전통과 문화적 자존감을 확보할 수 있는 활동에 치우치도록 만들었는데, 이는 화려하고 편리하지만 온전히 이해할 수 없었던 ‘근대 일본’라는 두려운 환경 속에서 조선인으로서의 정체성을 유지하기 위한 의식적 대응기제였을 가능성이 크다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, we investigated the inward consciousness of Chosun intellectuals about the 'modern period' and 'Japan' at the end of the 19th century by Donghaengilrok(東行日錄), a report of public journey written by Min Geon-ho who was a confucian scholar and a government official of Chosun at the same time.
Japan's external scenery was praised as a fairyland in the past. After China centric view had been introduced, this scenery was redescribed as a place where ideas and landscapes were separated, whereas this gap has been reduced or disappeared in modern times. First, unlike the Dispatch of the Chosun Envoys to Tokugawa Japan , they observed only modern culture that had been developed by transportation of inter-city network. Although Chosun intellectuals marveled at the speed and convenience of modern culture and attempted to distinguish what they saw from what they heard and to record thoroughly, they only listed superficial observations and factual information without trying to accommodate it or to conduct in-depth analyses. Rather, they showed a passive attitude in Tokyo, either by staying indoors or not documenting the knowledge and experience of Lee Heon- young in detail. Japan was a country of savages they wanted to avoid, and they showed an attitude toward China centric view about the superficial level of custom such as bathing culture. This negative perception, however, ended up in the level of custom, while they seem to have judged Western culture itself to be indispensable. In other word, Min Geon-ho's envoy experiences shows the persistence and cracks of China centric view, and also reveals the ambivalence about Japan.
This consciousness of discomfort was shaped by the longing for their homeland and family, and turned them into activities such as written conversation in Chinese and Literary exchange that allowed them to acquire an identity of Chinese classics and cultural self-esteem, It is highly likely that such behavior was a coping mechanism of consciousness to maintain the identity of Chosun in the modern period, a fancy and convenient but incompletely comprehensible and dreaded environment.
