Min Younghwi, a former high-ranking civil servant in the late period of the Greater Korean Empire, used his power to seize a vast land. This abuse of his authority profited him immensely in terms of capital accumulation. After that, he entered banking and became an accomplished entrepreneur. Among the second generation of the Mins, Min Daesik and Min Gyusik ran Buguk Jikmul(Buguk Textile Company) and Chosun Gyunjik(Chosun Silk Manufacturing Company). However, the main source of the capital accumulation of the Mins was investments in assets, such as letting, and those in stocks.
Moreover, the Mins' own companies, Youngbo Hapmyunghwesa (Youngbo & Co) and Gyesung Jusikhwesa(Gyesung Ltd.), been established for the purpose of efficient management of the family's fortune, grew 3 to 4 times larger in less than 10 years thanks to the active support from the public financial organizations under the colonial rule, Dongyan Chuksik Ltd., and Siksan Ltd. The Mins' companies could increase their capital by borrowing long-term loans, worth 15 to 20% of the Mins' total assets, of which interest rate lower than the lowest in the market fixed by the public financial organizations, and used them to purchase land, to improve agricultural production, and to construct buildings.
The reason that the Mins received preferential treatments from the colonial government was due to their support of the government's economic policies centered around land reclamation as well as land expropriation, and an increase of rice production. The family also set up and ran armament companies under the instruction of the government. Above all, the Mins actively collaborated the colonial rule in not only political but also social terms.
