<어둠의 자식들>과 1970년대 하층민 글쓰기의 양상 (Sons of Darkness and Aspects of Writings on the Subaltern in 1970s)

초록

1970년대 문학시장이 성장하면서 대중문학은 왕성한 생산성을 보인다. 이는 전문 문필가의 글쓰기에서 대중적인 글쓰기로 창작의 경로가 다양해졌기 때문이다. 이 때문에 대중문학은 다양한 글쓰기 장르와 연관된다. 논픽션, 체험 수기로 대표되는 저널리즘 글쓰기는 문학과 유사성을 가지며 영향을 주고받는다. 대중문학과 대중서사물은 단선적인 수용을 넘어 대중독자들의 글쓰기의 욕망을 자극하기도 한다. 논픽션이 활성화된 1970년대에서 대중문학과 대중서사물은 독자의 글쓰기 장으로 이끌었다. 특히 하층민을 소재로 한 소설과 저널리즘 글쓰기는 서술방식에서 영향을 미치며 새로운 글쓰기의 가능성을 시험한다. 이 과정에서 주목할 작품이 『어둠의 자식들』이다.
『어둠의 자식들』 연구를 위해서는 실제 필자를 확정짓는 것보다, 다양한 필자가 참여한 글쓰기에서 어떤 특징이 드러나는지를 확인하는 것이 필요하다. 구술자와 집필자가 일치하지 않는 상황에서 『어둠의 자식들』은 서술방식이 혼합되는 양상을 보인다. 구술자의 체험수기의 형식에서 3인칭 서술자는 개입될 수 없지만 이 작품에서는 자연스럽게 3인칭 서술자가 등장하여 구술자의 체험을 넘어서는 사건을 서술한다. 이와 더불어 논픽션의 관습과는 무관한 소설적 상상력이 발휘되는 등, 『어둠의 자식들』은 소설 서술과 유사한 점을 지니고 있다. 그리고 『어둠의 자식들』은 문어적 서술보다 구술적 서술이 강조되는 특징을 가지고 있다. 이는 저자의 의식적 창작행위가 사라지고 인물들이 직접 발화하는 상황이 강조되어 저자가 부인되는 (authorial disavowal) 서술상황을 드러낸다. 저자의 부인은 저널리즘 글쓰기의 특징 중 하나이다. 인물들의 자유로운 발화는 극적인 상황을 연출하면서 인물의 특징과 전망, 그리고 사회적 비판 등 하층민이 처한 상황을 사실적으로 재현한다. 이러한 서술방식은 기존의 글쓰기에서 언술되지 못한 하층민의 목소리와 현실을 재현한다는 의의를 지닌다.
소설과 저널리즘 글쓰기의 서술방식이 혼종되어 있는 『어둠의 자식들』은 하층민 집단의 목소리를 재생산하는 데 기여를 한다. 그리고 이러한 다성적인 목소리의 전략은 인접한 글쓰기 상황에 영향을 미친다. 소설가 황석영의 저작이 대표적이다. 황석영 역시 1970년대 노동현실을 소재로 한 르포를 발표한 바 있다. 황석영의 르포는 사회과학적 전망에 의해 기술 된 것으로, 『어둠의 자식들』에서 결여되었다고 생각되던 것이다. 그러나 황석영의 소설들에서는 이러한 전망보다는 인물들의 말하기 상황이 더욱 우세하다. 인물과 서술자의 목소리가 혼합되면서 황석영의 소설은 서술대상의 목소리를 생생히 재현하려 한다. 이는 『어둠의 자식들』의 발화가 연설의 형식으로 자신의 목소리를 재현하는 것과 비교될 수 있다. 『어둠의 자식들』의 생경한 목소리의 중첩은 구성상 완결성의 결여가 아니라 하층민의 목소리를 재현할 수 있는 서술방식의 전략의 하나이다.

영어초록

Since industrialization in 1970s, the Increase of public readers and popular media drove the increase of novels and journalistic writings for both of them. In the course of modernity of literature, novels and journalistic writings are in complementary relations. Journalistic writing is a meaningful genre which was generated for the reality and the perspective in the relation of literature and journalism. At the Korean circumstance of 1970s' writings and literature, nonfiction was a leading genre among the journalistic writings. Specially writings on urban subaltern had effects each other and showed a possibility of new style of writings. Sons of Darkness(『어둠의 자식들』) is a noticeable work for that possibility.
For the study on Sons of Darkness, it is important to research on the way how it write, not on writer who is still not clearly uncovered. Because the dictator and writer is separated, points of the views and narration styles is confused in narration of Sons of Darkness. Sons of Darkness is a essay on personal experiences. So an omniscient viewpoint is not permitted in principle. But there is an omniscient narrator who show fictional feature and imagination, which is unrelated with the journalistic writings. In this point, Sons of Darkness is similar to the novel. And Sons of Darkness is written in a colloquial style, not in the literary style, which means this work is not written with literary conscious but is recorded with the authorial disavowal. The authorial disavowal is one of the distinguishing features of the journalistic writings. Free enunciation of persons made dramatic situations, and presented a possibility of characters, perspectives, social criticism, and a way of speaking by the subaltern who is regarded never to speak.
Hybridism of fictions and the journalistic writings in narration in Sons of Darkness makes an important contribution to representation of subaltern's voices. The strategy of polyphonic narration has effects on the situation of writing of adjoining genres. Seokyeong Hwang(황석영)'s works is representative results. He wrote some reportages in 1970s. His reportages shows the social perspectives, which he thought can not find in Sons of Darkness. He researched every sources for the reality of labor conditions in 1970s with reports, interviews, and other pieces of writings as diaries and letters. But in his fictions, the colloquial style could be found rather than perspectives. Integrations of voices of characters and narrator make vivid representation of reality possible. His fictions can be compared with Sons of Darkness in narrations style. Strange voices in Sons of Darkness is the strategy for representation of the subaltern, not the lack of plot completion.
