조선 민화(民畵)의 유형 및 소재의 상징과 특징 연구 (A Study on the Types, Material Symbols, and Characteristics of Joseon Folk Paintings)

초록

본 연구는 조선 민화가 만들어진 배경과 민화에 등장하는 소재들의 상징성을 각각 살펴보고, 민화의 조형적·내용적 특징을 도출하였다. 민화는 조선시대 회화 중 표현에 있어서 해학성과 다양성이 가장 잘 나타나고 있다. 이러한 표현의 해학성과 다양성에는 조선 후기 서민들이 그들의 불만을 해소하고, 모든 사물을 자연스럽게 관조하는 따뜻한 포용력이 담겨 있다고 볼 수 있다. 연구 결과 이는 전통회화에서는 볼 수 없는 민화만의 독특한 조형적·내용적 특징에 기인하였음을 알 수 있었다. 민화의 조형적 특징으로는 여러 개를 유기적으로 겹쳐 표현하는 역원근법, 물체를 이차원 또는 삼차원의 객체로 다양한 각도에서 표현하는 다시점, 어울릴 것 같지 않은 사물들을 한 평면 위에 구성함으로써 원근법이나 입체감을 무시한 자유자재한 평면성, 표현하고자 하는 사물을 중심으로 대칭이 되도록 하는 대칭형 구도, 그리고 한 화면 속에서의 사물의 크기와 비례관계의 무시를 들 수 있다. 민화의 내용적 특징으로는 조선 후기 서민들의 불만과 억압된 심리적 갈등을 웃음의 미학으로 표현한 해학성, 형식상으로는 실재하는 사물을 표현하고 있지만 그 사물에 내재되어 있는 추상성, 그리고 틀에 얽매이지 않고 자유롭게 그린 후 이름을 밝힐 필요가 없거나 밝히기를 거부한 서민 화가의 무명성을 들 수 있다. 이 연구는 조선 민화의 상징성과 조형적·내용적 특징을 분석함으로써 조선 민화가 한국 회화사에서 적절한 위치를 찾을 수 있도록 기여할 것으로 기대된다. 이 논문은 조선 민화의 다양한 의미와 가치를 조명하고, 민화가 서민들의 감성과 사회적 품위를 과시하는 역할을 보여줄 것으로 예상된다. 또한, 논문은 민화의 역사적, 문화적 의의를 다시 한 번 강조함으로써 민화의 가치를 인식하고 평가하는데 기여할 것으로 기대된다. 연구 결과는 민화를 평가하고 보존하는데 필요한 근거를 제공하며, 민화의 미래 발전과 계승에 대한 방향을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

영어초록

This study examines the background of Korean folk paintings and the symbolism of the elements depicted in these paintings, in order to derive their formal and thematic characteristics. Folk paintings represent the most diverse and expressive forms of painting during the Joseon Dynasty. The richness and diversity of these expressions reflect the warm inclusiveness of the late Joseon commoners, who used them as a means to address their grievances and perceive everything naturally. The research results reveal that this can be attributed to the unique formal and thematic characteristics of folk paintings, which are not found in traditional paintings. In terms of form, folk paintings employ organic overlapping of multiple objects, a multi-perspective representation of objects in two or three dimensions, a disregard for perspective or spatial depth through freely manipulated flatness, a symmetrical composition that centers around the depicted object, and a disregard for size and proportional relationships within a single screen. In terms of content, folk paintings employ humor as an aesthetic expression of the grievances and suppressed psychological conflicts of the late Joseon commoners. Although they visually depict tangible objects, they embody abstractness inherent in these objects, and they are characterized by the anonymity of the commoner painters who freely painted without the need to disclose their names or identities. Folk paintings represent the strongest sense of subjectivity, vividly expressing the life philosophy and emotions of the commoners during the Joseon Dynasty. Despite their significance, folk paintings have not been given proper recognition in Korean art history. Therefore, by examining the unique characteristics of folk paintings that are absent in traditional paintings from a modern perspective, it is hoped that they will be continued and further developed in the future. By analyzing the symbolism, formal, and content characteristics of Korean folk paintings, this research is expected to contribute to finding an appropriate position for Korean folk paintings in the history of Korean art. This paper is anticipated to shed light on the various meanings and values of folk paintings and demonstrate their role in showcasing the sentiments and social dignity of common people. Furthermore, the paper is expected to emphasize the historical and cultural significance of folk paintings once again, thus contributing to the recognition and evaluation of their value. The research findings are expected to provide evidence for the evaluation and preservation of folk paintings and offer guidance for their future development and succession.
