새터민을 위한 교양국어 수업의 원칙과 방향 (The principles and direction of Korean classes as liberal arts for North Korean defectors)

초록

국내 새터민의 수가 늘어나면서 대학 내의 새터민의 수도 늘고 있다. 그러나 다수의 새터민 학습자들은 남북한 체제의 차이, 남북한의 교육내용의 차이, 탈북과정에서의 교육공백 등의 문제로 대학 수업에 적응하지 못하고 있다. 이 논문의 목적은 대학 학습자인 새터민들의 수업적응 현황을 살피고 이들을 돕기 위한 방안을 모색하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 면담과 설문조사를 통해 수업적응의 어려움에 대해 구체적으로 알아보았다.
새터민들은 대학 수업에서 사용되는 어휘를 이해하는 데 곤란을 겪고 있었다. 이들 어휘는 이러한 어휘들은 대학 교양과정 학생들이 배워야 할 일반 원칙이나 개념을 포함한 것들이므로 새터민들의 대학적응을 위해서는 꼭 필요한 요소들이다. 또 새터민들은 일기나 스기 과정에서 객관적 서술에 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 객관적 서술이나 논리적 서술 등 대학의 수업활동에 필요한 요소들을 충분히 훈련하지 못한 것이다. 또한 발표를 통해 자신의 견해를 말하는 활동에도 어려움을 겪고 있는 것으로 드러났다.
새터민들의 대학 부적응을 해소할 수 있기 위해서 두 가지 측면에서 접근할 필요가 있었다. 먼저 일반 대학 교양국어 수업에 새터민을 포함시켜 교양교육의 목적을 달성하게 해야 한다는 것이다. 이는 새터민이 다수 집단 속에서 적응하고 교류하는 과정을 배우는 효과도 기대할 수 있다. 반면 새터민이 겪고 있는 어려움을 보완하는 방안으로는 다양한 주체들의 협업과정이 필요함을 밝혔다. 이 관련 주체들은 새터민을 담당하고 있는 교수, 수업조교, 교내 교육센터, 정부 및 지자체가 된다.
먼저 새터민을 가르치는 교수와 수업조교들이 다양한 피드백과 면담을 하고 그 결과를 공유하고 향후 수업에 반영하는 과정을 통해 새터민의 수업결손 분을 보충하는 방법이다. 수업조교는 담당교수와 함께 이러한 피드백과 면담과정을 분담해 가는 과정에서 소수자에 대한 교수 방법을 배울 수 있다. 교내의 교육기관인 평생교육원이나 교수학습센터에서 새터민을 지원하는 특강이나 프로그램 및 멘토링 제도를 운영함으로써 새터민을 도울 수 있다. 마지막으로 정부차원의 지원을 효과적 실질적으로 개선하는 방안을 추가할 수 있다.

영어초록

As the number of North Korean defectors increases in South Korea, so does the number of North Korean defector students in the universities. However, many students from North Korea have difficulties in adapting to the classes of universities owing to the differences between the South and the North such as the system, the content of education and the gap in education they had during the process of defecting from North Korea. This thesis aims to investigate the present state of the class adaptation of North Korean defectors and seek for ways to help them. In order to do that, concrete research has been conducted through interviews and questionnaires on difficulties for class adaptation.
It transpired that the North Korean defectors have been experiencing difficulties in understanding the vocabulary used in university education. This vocabulary includes general principles and concepts that have to be studied for liberal arts in universities and therefore are essential elements for university adaptation for North Korean defectors. And also they were having difficulties in objective descriptions such as diary or writing tasks. It seems that they have not had enough training for objective or logical descriptions that are essential for university class activities. In addition, they turned out to be having difficulties also in speaking activities such as expressing their own opinions though presentation.

In order to solve the problem, we need to approach it from two points of view. First, the purpose of liberal arts education has to be achieved by including the North Korean defectors in the Korean education for liberal arts studies in general universities. This will bring the effect of learning experience for the defector students to interact and adapt in a majority group. On the other hand, in order to compliment the difficulties experienced by the North Korean defectors, a cooperative process among various parties is necessary. The related parties involve professors, teaching assistants, education centers in school, government and local government.
First of all, the professors and teaching assistants could give various feedbacks and have interviews with the defectors, and by sharing the result with everyone involved and by reflecting the information gathered in future classes, they can supplement the deficient areas of the defector students. Through the process of sharing such feedbacks and interviews with the professor, the teaching assistants can learn proper teaching strategies for the minority group. The operation of special lectures, programs and mentor system supported by educational organizations in school such as lifelong education center or center for teaching and learning, could also help the defector students. Finally, the measures to practically and efficiently improve government support could be added.
