초록

This paper explores an approach to an adolescent literature-based citizenship education to enhance democratic values and social responsibilities for young people which is focused on the intertextuality of literature and social education. Linda Sue Park, a Korean-American novelist and a Newbery Medal winner, explores her Korean cultural and historic legacies for literary resources to train young people's minds for a democratic understanding of different cultures, races, and histories. In Project Mulberry, the hyphenated protagonist Julia is self-conscious about her heritage and grapples with what it means to be Korean and Korean-American in the US. Through her experience with Mr. Dixon, an elderly African-American, Julia, with her friend Patrick, goes through an initiation process intermittent with epiphanic moments surmounting stereotypes of racial-ethnic groups and cultural hierarchies. Project Mulberry experiments with multiple perspectives to construct cultural tolerance, to prepare youth as citizens of a future world, and to lead these youth to act in accordance with an egalitarian society. This work also involves environmental literacy, thus enhancing consciousness to environmental problems and helping youngsters to envision an ecologically viable world.
