이 논문은 게리 스나이더의 『거북섬』에 수록된 시와 『야생의 실천』, 『공간 속의 장소』 등에 실린 에세이를 심층 분석하여 이 작품들이 아메리카 원주민 생태학과 교차하는 양상을 고찰한다. 이를 위해 인간과 자연이 상호의존과 공생의 네트워크를 형성하는 포괄적인 생태학적 관점과 생태 공동체적 삶에 초점을 맞춘다. 또한 스나이더와 유사한 사상과 관점을 지닌 사이먼 J. 오티즈, 그리고 레슬리 M. 실코 등의 저명한 푸에블로 작가들의 글을 함께 논의함으로써 스나이더의 시와 생태시학이 아메리카 원주민, 특히 미국 남서부의 푸에블로(Pueblo)족과 나바호(Navajo)족의 세계관, 생태관과 공명하는 방식을 보여준다. 첫째로는 “아나사지”와 “코요테”의 이미지에 초점을 맞춘 시를 분석하여 스나이더의 중심 사상인 “생물지역주의”와 “원주민성”이 원주민의 장소 감각과 교차하는 방식을 설명한다. 둘째, “사람”과 “상호의존”이라는 개념에 초점을 맞춘 시를 분석하면서 미국 남서부 원주민들의 구전 전통과 사냥 의식이 환경 파괴, 기후 위기, 그리고 이른바 인류세라는 측면에서 어떤 방식으로 현대 미국을 비판적으로 다루는지 논의한다.

영어초록

This paper conducts an in-depth analysis of Gary Snyder’s poems from Turtle Island as well as essays from his monographs, including The Practice of the Wild and A Place in Space, to examine how these works intersect with Native American ecology. The central focus is on comprehensive ecological perspectives and ecocommunal life, in which humans and nature form a network of interdependence and symbiosis. Furthermore, to establish that Snyder’s poetry and ecopoetics resonate with the cosmos and ecology of Native Americans, particularly the Pueblo and Navajo peoples of the American Southwest, this paper discusses the writings of prominent Pueblo writers such as Simon J. Ortiz and Leslie M. Silko, whose ideas and perspectives are similar to those of Snyder. First, this paper describes the ways in which Snyder’s central ideas of “bioregionalism” and “nativeness” intersect with Native peoples’ sense of place, analyzing poems focused on the images of “Anasazi” and “Coyote.” Second, through analyses of poems centered on the concepts of “people” and “interdependence,” it demonstrates how the oral traditions and hunting rituals of the aforementioned Native peoples critically addresses the contemporary US in terms of environmental degradation, the climate crisis, and the so-called Anthropocene.
