환경 미학과 썩음의 미학- 자연미 체험의 양면성은 극복될 수 있는가? (Environmental Aesthetics and the Aesthetics of Decay - Can the double-faced appreciation of natural beauty be overcome?)

초록

환경미학의 고찰 대상은 예술작품의 아름다움이 아니며 인간에 의해 묘사된 자연의 아름다움도 아니고 오직 자연 자체의 아름다움에 대한 인간의 직접적 체험과 평가를 고찰한다는 점에서 기존의 미학과 구별된다. 또한 자연미의 감상과 미학적 평가에는 긍정적 평가만이 적용될 수 있을 뿐, 부정적이거나 비판적 평가는 적용될 수 없다는 입장, 즉 긍정미학(positive aesthetics)의 입장을 취한다는 점에서도 예술론적 미학이나 비평이론과는 구별된다. 그렇다면 자연에 대해서는 아름답다는 평가만이 허용될 뿐, 추하거나 혐오스럽다는 평가는 허용될 수 없다는 것인가? 환경미학의 이런 입장은 기존의 자연관이 달라져야 함을 요구한다는 점에서 우리의 전통적 자연관에 대한 하나의 도전이다. 기존의 자연관은 아름다운 자연과 함께 추하고 더럽고 혐오스러운 자연 체험도 인정해 왔기 때문이다. - 그렇다면 이 도전은 어떻게 정당화될 수 있는가? 이와 관련하여 다음의 세 가지를 검토한다. 1) 정당화를 위한 환경미학의 이론적 개념화; 2) 늪과 갯벌의 아름다움 체험의 예증 사례; 3) 늪과 갯벌에 대한 긍정미학의 생태학적 조건.
이러한 검토는 썩음의 미학으로 이어진다. 즉 늪과 갯벌에 대한 긍정미학은 썩음의 생태학적 가치와 함께 썩음의 아름다움 가치도 인정해야 하기 때문이다.

영어초록

Environmental aesthetics deserves to be taken as separate area of aesthetics because it takes into consideration neither the art works nor any artificial presentation of nature or natural beings. It takes to its theme only what men experience, feel, and aesthetically appreciate in their direct encounter with (the beauty of) nature. It should be differentiated from the normal sense of aesthetics (whether philosophy of art or philosophy of criticism) because of the principle of the so-called “positive aesthetics” which demands that, so far as it concerns the beauty of nature, only positive aesthetics is applicable and negative or critical aesthetics should not be allowed. Does it mean that nature could be appreciated only as beautiful or pleasurable and not as ugly or unpleasant? These sort of position challenge the traditional point of view of nature so far as they contradict our general and long lasted view of nature that includes apparent bifurcation, and we have material evidences enough of the double-faced way of aesthetical appreciation of nature out of the long history of human encounter with nature. We know that there have been in our judgement on nature always the beautiful nature and the ugly nature, the pleasant nature and the unpleasant nature. - Do we have reasons enough to justify this challenge? Can we overcome the double-faced way of aesthetical appreciation of nature? Regarding these questions I propose to investigate following three subjects : 1) theories and concepts for justifying the principle of positive aesthetics; 2) some cases of exemplification for overcoming the double-faced aesthetical appreciation of the swamps and mud-flats; 3) the ecological relevance in justifying the positive aesthetics of the swamps and mud-flats.
This investigation will lead us then automatically to the aesthetics of decay as the final theme of environmental aesthetics, so far as the process of decay is the very unavoidable constituent in the whole ecological process of recycling and re-creation of life that makes the swamps and mud-flats as ecologically valuable and aesthetically beautiful.
