선사시대 암각화를 통한 고구려 고분벽화 미의식의 기원에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Origin of the Aesthetic Consciousness of Goguryeo Tomb Murals through Prehistoric Petroglyphs)

초록

본 논문은 선사시대 암각화를 통해 우리만의 고유한 미의식을 찾고 그동안 암각화 연구에서 미진했던 조형적 특성에 근거한 심미적 의미에 대해 분석하였다. 이에 울산 대곡리 반구대의 線刻動物, 울산 천전리의 幾何紋, 고령 양전동의 神像이 암각화의 일반적 발전과정을 함께하는 핵심적 조형물이라고 보고 이를 살펴보았다. 그리고 암각화의 형상이 가진 미적 특성을 분석하는 것을 통해 한국예술의 근간이 된 고구려 고분벽화의 미의식과의 상관성을 알아보았다. 선사시대 암각화와 고구려 고분벽화는 공통적으로 생명의 活潑潑性을 토대로 한 특성을 보였다. 이는 하늘을 향한 비상을 꿈꾸며 신적 존재자를 존중하는 것은 활발발한 자연의 원리를 존중하는 것이고 하늘과 같은 본질적 정신성 자체를 우선하여 하늘과 같은 이미지를 상상하는 抽象性을 만들어냈다. 그리고 우리가 추구하는 신적 이미지를 우리 안의 마음, 즉 내면의 소리를 통해 구하기 때문에 기존의 신적인 이미지에 함몰되지 않고 幻想性에 기반한 우리만의 신적 이미지 찾기가 가능해진 것이라고 볼 수 있다.
線刻動物에서 날뛰는 듯한 넘치는 생명력을 존중하고 이를 드러낸 활발발성의 氣가 고분벽화의 翔禽瑞獸에서는 질주하는 동물에 날개를 달고 물고기에 다리와 날개를 더해주며 始原의 生氣를 표현하는 것으로 드러났다. 또한 수렵도에서 물결무늬로 산을 표현한 것은 천전리 물결 문양의 형태와 닮아있으며 이를 통해 우주와 생명의 조화 원리에 바탕한 생명의 현상을 존중하고 이를 드러내는 마음을 담은[集中] 역동을 최우선의 가치로 여긴 것을 알 수 있다. 그리고 萬歲에서 凶鳥의 이미지를 吉鳥로 바꾼 것은 우주의 ‘日月相推而明生’하는 원리를 깨닫고 凶에 긍정적 가치 부여를 통해 이를 극복할 수 있는 더 큰 힘의 근원으로 여긴 것이다. 이는 양전동 신상에서 기존 신의 이미지 비틀기 통한 해체와 전복을 시도하며 생명의 에너지를 극대화하고자 한 미의식과 통한다. 또한 사신도에서 현무의 거북은 굳셈, 뱀은 부드러움을 상징하여 서로를 힘껏 미는[相推] 행위를 통해 변화를 이루어내는 生의 과정 자체를 보여주고 있다. 다른 사신도에서도 동물적 이미지 자체에 갇히지 않고 하늘로 올라가고 있는 듯한 표현에 집중하고 있다. 이는 우리나라 암각화의 중심적 위치를 차지하는 신상이 제의적 성격을 띠고 있다는 점과 고구려 고분벽화에 등장하는 샤머니즘의 巫적 존재자가 조류 숭배를 기저로 한 人面鳥로서 신을 향한 비상을 꿈꾸는 것에서도 그 미적 관련성을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

In this study, I found unique Korean aesthetic consciousness through prehistoric petroglyphs and analyzed the aesthetic meaning based on the formative characteristics, which have not been covered in existing petroglyph research. Accordingly, I looked at the animal petrogram of Bangudae, Daegok-ri, Ulsan, the geometric patterns in Cheonjeon-ri, Ulsan, and the deity statues of Yangjeon-dong, Goryeong, as key sculptures in the general development of petroglyphs. I also investigated the correlation with the aesthetic consciousness of Goguryeo tomb murals, which became the basis of Korean art, by analyzing the aesthetic characteristics of the shape of petroglyphs. Prehistoric petroglyphs and Goguryeo tomb murals have characters based on the vitality of life in common. Because Koreans respected the vital principles of nature, they respected divine beings by dreaming of soaring to the sky. Therefore, prioritizing essential spirituality like the sky, they created an abstraction imagining an image like the sky. And since Koreans sought the divine image they had been looking for through their inner heart, it was possible to find their divine image based on fantasy without being immersed in the existing divine image.
Koreans expressed the energy of vitality that respects the overflowing life force in animal petrogram, and it emerged the life energy of the origin in the auspicious birds and beasts of the tomb murals by attaching wings to a running animal and adding legs and wings to a fish. In addition, their expression of the mountain with wave patterns in their paintings of hunting resembles the shape of the Cheonjeon-ri wave pattern. It can be seen that they regarded the dynamism of the heart that respects and reveals the life phenomenon based on the principle of harmony between the universe and life as the top priority. They could change the image of bad-luck birds into auspicious ones because they realized the principle of the universe that the sun and the moon push each other to brighten up life and regarded it as a source of greater strength that can overcome bad luck by assigning positive values ​​to the bad luck. It is in line with the aesthetic consciousness of maximizing the energy of life by attempting to dismantle and overturn the image of the existing gods in the deity statues of Yangjeon-dong. In the paintings of Hyeonmu, one of the four directional deities, the tortoise stands for strength, and the snake symbolizes softness. It shows the process of life that achieves change through the act of pushing each other as hard as possible. Paintings of the other three directional deities also concentrate on the expression of ascending to the sky without being confined to the typical animal image. Thus, I could confirm that there is an aesthetic relation between the fact that the statue of the deity occupying a central position in the petroglyphs of Korea has a ritual character and that the shamanistic beings that appear in the tomb murals of Goguryeo dream of flying toward the gods as a human-faced bird based on bird worship.
