莊子사상에 나타난 미적 범주와 동양예술 — 氣를 중심으로 — (The Esthetic Category found in Chuangtzu' thought and Oriental Art : focused on Chi(氣))

초록

장자의 철학이 추구하는 道는 일종의 예술정신이며 풍부한 미적 원리를 함축하고 있다. 그 가운데 후대의 예술에 가장 심원한 영향을 미친 미적 원리를 담고 있는 범주로는 유체(流體), 무(無), 정신, 생명 등이 있다. 이들은 모두 장자 자연학의 토대인 氣의 특성과 연관된 것들이다.
유체는 氣의 가장 뚜렷한 특성에서 나온다. 氣는 쉼 없는 운동이요, 흐름이다. 氣의 특성에 따라서 장자 역시 삶과 세계를 끊임없는 변화 생성 과정으로 보고 있다. 그러한 氣의 무궁한 변화를 긍정할 때, ‘나비의 꿈’에서 보는 것처럼 미적 쾌감이 발생한다. 이것을 ‘유체의 미’라고 불러도 좋을 것이다. 유체의 미는 동양화에서 선을 중시하는 것으로 나타난다. 서양화를 점과 면의 회화라고 한다면, 동양화는 선의 회화이다. 선은 氣의 흐름을 형상화하는데 가장 적합한 표현 방법이다. 선의 회화는 유체의 미를 실현하고자 한다.
氣는 쉴 새 없이 모였다 흩어지면서 有와 無의 경계를 넘나든다. 有가 질서의 영역이라면 無는 혼돈의 영역이다. 장자가 말하는 분할되지 않은 ‘天地之美’를 구비하기 위해서는 분할된 개체들의 근저에 있는 무, 질서의 바탕에 있는 혼돈을 감지하여야 한다. ‘天地之美’란 無의 미이다. 산수화의 여백과 시의 意境, ‘象外之象’ 등은 장자의 ‘무의 미’를 실현하고자 한다. 무는 또한 무한이다. 산수화의 공간과 시선은 ‘아득함’의 공간과 시선인데 그것은 양적 측정을 넘어서 존재의 깊은 차원을 계시한다. 그 차원은 무, 무한의 차원이다.
장자는 道를 내면화하여 정신적 체험으로 변화시켰다. 精神은 氣의 신묘한 작용성이다. 참된 앎은 ‘外’에서 이루어지는 것이 아니라 ‘內’에서 이루어진다. ‘內’라는 것은 정신 속에서 주체와 객체가 하나로 융합하는 것이다. 이것을 가능하게 하는 수양 방법이 ‘心齋’와 ‘坐忘’이다. 心齋란 마음을 비워 氣의 상태가 되도록 하는 것이다. 이 상태에서 정신이 주체와 객체의 경계선을 넘어서 작용한다. 이러한 정신의 작용을 좌망에서는 ‘크게 통함[大通]’이라고 하였다. 주체와 객체를 융합시키는 장자의 정신은 자아의 편협한 관점을 넘어서 ‘사물의 관점에서 사물을 보는’ 시선을 가능하게 한다. 그리하여 후대의 시에서 情과 景의 융합으로 나타난다. 그림에서는 ‘胸中丘壑’의 표현으로 나타난다. 이렇게 나타난 산수화의 풍경은 정신의 미를 실현시키는 정신의 풍경이다.
장자의 사유는 낭만적 몽상이거나 형이상학적 사변이 아니다. 그것은 현실 속에서 고통을 받고 있는 생명의 해방을 치열하게 추구한다. 모든 고통을 타자와 나의 잘못된 관계에서 발생한다. 장자의 철학은 타자와 나의 관계를 죽음의 관계에서 생명의 관계로 변화시키려는 정신의 모험이다. 생명의 관계를 위해서는 너와 나의 구분을 넘어선 우주적 기와 접촉해야 한다. 우주적 기는 우주의 생명력이다. 우주의 생명력과 접촉하여 타자와 내가 서로 생명의 봄을 이루는 것이 바로 ‘天地之美’이다. 이것은 ‘생명의 미’이다. 후대 동양 미학의 제1원리인 ‘氣韻生動’은 장자의 이러한 생명의 미와 닿아 있다.

영어초록

Tao(道) which Chuangtzu persues is a kind of artistic spirit, implying abundant esthetic principles. The category containing the esthetic principles that has had much deeper effects on the next generation is 'Fluid', 'Not-being', 'Spirit', 'Life' and so on. These things are connected with Chi, the foundation of Chuangtzu's Physica.
Fluid comes from the distinctive character of Chi, which is the continuous movement and flowing. According to the character of Chi, Chuangtzu looks upon life and world as the process of changing and producing continuously. When accepting the infinite change of Chi, he can see the same esthetic pleasure as he does in the 'dream of a butterfly'. It can be called 'the beauty of fluid'. The beauty of fluid can be considered to attach importance to 'line' in an oriental painting. The oriental painting is a drawing of line while the western one is that of point and surface. 'Line' is the most appropriate expressive way to shape the flowing of Chi. The beauty of fluid can be realized by the drawing of line.
Chi, gathering together and scattered unceasingly, goes to the boundary between Being and Not-being. Being is the area of order while Not-being is the area of chaos. We have to sense Not-being on which divided individuals are based and chaos on which the order is based in order to get 'the beauty of Heaven and Earth'(天地之美) Chuangtzu is talking about. 'The beauty of Heaven and Earth' is a beauty of Not-being, which can be realized by the blank of Landscape Painting, yijing(意境) of poetry, a figure beyond a figure(an image beyond an image) and so on. Not-being is also considered as infinity. The blank and glance of Landscape Painting are those of being faraway, which reveal the deep dimension of existence beyond quantitative measurement; it is the dimension of Not-being, infinity.
Chuangtzu has changed Tao into a spiritual experience with internalization. Spirit is a mysterious function of Chi. True knowledge doesn't get accomplished from an outside, but an inside, which means fusing a subject and an object into one in mind. The ways of mental training which make it possible are 'Emptiness of the Mind'(心齋) and 'Mind of Detachment'(坐忘). Emptiness of the Mind is to become the state of Chi by emptying mind. In this state mind goes beyond the boundary a subject and an object. This function of the mind can be called Wide Open in Mind of Detachment. The standpoint of Chuangtzu to fuse a subject and an object makes it possible to have an eye of seeing things from the viewpoint of things beyond the narrow view of self. In the picture Landscape Painting is presented as a 'hill and valley in mind', which is the spiritual scenery to realize the beauty of mind.
The thought of Chuangtzu is not a romantic daydream or a metaphysical thinking, but seeks severely the liberation of life which is suffering in reality. All sufferings can be caused from the wrong relations between me and others. Chuangtzu's philosophy is a spiritual adventure to change the dead relations between me and others into the relations of life. The way to make the relations of life is to contact the universal Chi beyond the separation of you and me. The universal Chi is the origin of the universal life. By contacting the source of the universal life, to accomplish the spring of life between me and others is 'the beauty of Heaven and Earth'. It is the beauty of life. The first principle of post-oriental esthetics, 'Spiritual Rhythm expressed in the movement'(氣韻生動), is connected with the beauty of life like this.
