‘부재’의 감각과 미적 공동체 - 『질마재 신화』를 중심으로 - (The Sentiment of “Absence” and the Aesthetic Community : With a Focus on the Jilmajae Myth)

이 글의 목적은 서정주의 영원성의 실질적 의미를 불멸성으로 이해하고, 『질마재 신화』에서 나타난, 영원불멸성이 보존되고 감각되는 미적 공동체의 성격을 밝히는 데 있다. 『질마재 신화』는 서정주의 신라기획의 연장선에 놓이는 것이다. 그것은 영원성 자체가 아닌 영원성의 ‘토대’ 내지 영원성을 향유할 수 있는 ‘문화적 풍토’에 대한 관심 가운데 산출된 것이다. 『질마재 신화』에서는 미적인 것만이 현실과 영원의 세계를 가로지를 수 있는 영역으로 제시되었으며, 그것은 배제가 아닌 통합의 원리로 기능했다. 『질마재 신화』에서 이미지의 형태로 향유된 영원불멸의 감각은 ‘부재’의 감각을 경유하는 것이었다. 이 부재의 감각은 동시에 영원불멸의 감각을 통해 뒷받침 된다. 질마재 사람들은 부재의 상황을 영원불멸성의 한 형태로 인식하고 대용의 감각을 통해 영원불멸성을 향유하며 살아간다. 하지만 『질마재 신화』의 영원불멸성이 견고한 것은 아니다. 영원불멸에 대한 미래의 불확실성이 노출되는 등 미묘한 균열과 침식의 가능성이 시에 내재되어 있다. 서정주는 『질마재 신화』에서 신라를 영원불멸의 것으로 간직할 미적 공동체인 질마재를 창조하고, 동시에 사라져가는 질마재를 영원불멸의 것으로 간직할 또다른 미적 공동체를 요청하고 있었다. 이러한 까닭에 신화와 구술양식이 선택되었다. 『질마재 신화』는 주관적 확실성을 추구하는 현대적 주체의 성격을 보여준다. 서정주는 자기만의 세계를 구성하고 거기에 절대적 질서를 부여하여 통솔하고자 하는 현대적 주체의 전형이라 할 수 있다. 깊이의 실체보다는 깊이가 전해주는 ‘힘’에 매료되었던 서정주가 시로 구축한 질마재는 ‘밖’을 상상할 수 없는 미적 공동체이자 ‘안전한 자유’의 세계였다.

영어초록

The objective of this dissertation is to disclose the nature of the aesthetic community, in which eternal-immortality is preserved and sensed in the Jilmajae myth, and to investigate the nature of modernity in the Jilmajae myth on the premise that Seo Jeong-Joo's eternality substantially signifies immortality. The Jilmajae myth is based on the extension of Seo Jeong-Joo's Shilla Planning. It is not eternality as a whole, but has been produced amid the interest in “cultural nature” that is able to possess eternality, or the “foundation” of eternality.
Aesthetic matters were proposed as the only category that transcends reality and eternality in the Jilmajae myth, which was possible through the principle of integration, rather than exclusion. The sentiment of eternal-immortality possessed in the form of an image in the Jilmajae Myth was to connect through the sentiment of “absence.” This sentiment of absence is concurrently supported by the sentiment of eternal- immortality. The people of Jilmajae perceive the status of absence as a form of eternal-immortality, and live in possession of eternal-immortality through an alternate sentiment. However, the eternal-immortality of the Jilmajae myth is not substantial. The subtle possibility of cracks and erosion is inherent in the poem, such as the susceptibility of eternal- immortality to future uncertainty. Seo Jeong-Joo created Jilmajae, the aesthetic community that will preserve Shilla’s eternal-immortality and propose another aesthetic community that will preserve the fading Jilmajae in eternal-immortality. For such reason, the modes of mythology and oral statement have been selected.
The Jilmajae myth illustrates the nature of modern subjects in pursuit of subjective certainty. Seo Jeong-Joo can be said to be the model of a modern subject in the composition of his own world, with the authority of the absolute order to take the reins. Seo Jeong-Joo, who was fascinated by the “power” delivered by the depth, rather than the essential depth, of Jilmajae, which Seo constructed in the poem as the world of secure freedom and an aesthetic community where the “outside” is unimaginable.
