    In the postmodern historical view, it is widely accepted that History has been (re)constructed and cannot represent reality as it is. The boundaries between history and story have also been blurred and repositioned due to the epistemological changes regarding History. Along with this transition, interest in personal lives and individual histories has increased and the relation between microhistory and macrohistory has been examined.
    This paper analyzes the way each main character tells their individual history in Julian Barnes' The Sense of an Ending and Kim Yeonsu's Whoever You Are However Lonely You Are and explores if an individual's personal history might be read as a self contained history in its own right. Both novels focus on describing the details of individuals' pasts and their memories. The microhistorical research approach, which was introduced in the field of History from the 1970s, may expand the current postmodern historical reading, by positing an individual history writing as a history. It is different from the current postmodern approach which has been attempting to give a voice to minorities who were hidden or excluded from main stream historical accounts. Instead of dealing with the conflicts between the majority and the minority or the privileged and the underprivileged, this paper aims to expand the perspective regarding history with an emphasis on the values of each individual's history and their historical narrative.
    To represent both novels' postmodern historical view, the first chapter introduces the microhistorical approach and how Barnes and Kim's works read as microhistories. The second chapter analyzes the main characters' untrustworthy memories and reconstructed pasts to show the impossibility of the representation and construction of history. The third chapter analyzes coincidental incidents and involuntary choices that would eventually turn out as having been an inevitable or lead to unanticipated correlated consequences.
