통합적 기능미의 경험으로서 디자인미학 고찰 (The Experience of Integrative Functional Beauty as Design Aesthetics)

초록

연구배경: 기존 디자인미학에는 철학의 미적 개념을 도입하여 디자인의 미를 해석하였다. 본고에서는 철학의 미적 개념과 더불어 디자인미학의 중심적 주제가 되어야 할 기능에 대한 해석과, 디자인 고유의 미라 할 수 있는 기능미에 대하여 논하였다. 또한, 관조적 감상의 예술작품과 달리 디자인은 맥락적 경험 과정에 기능미가 존재하므로 디자인 고유의 기능미의 경험에 대해 논하여 이를 디자인미학의 주요 개념으로 제시하고자 하였다.
연구방법: 문헌연구를 통해 기존 철학의 미적 개념이 디자인미학에 적용된 사례를 파악하였다. 그리고 디자인의 미적 대상인 기능의 개념을 확장적으로 재정의하고 기능미의 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 또한, 디자인의 미적 특질은 맥락적 경험을 통해 드러나므로 다양한 미학연구와 이론들을 근거로 기능미 경험의 차원과 과정에 대해 논하였으며, 이를 통해 기능미의 경험모델을 수립하였다.
연구결과: 감각기능은 실제기능과 함께 확장된 기능의 개념이다. 디자인 경험과정에서 이러한 기능들이 사용자의 인지와 감성에 통합적으로 상호작용한 결과로서 기능미의 판단과 기능미의 감성이 발생된다. 그리고 철학의 미적 개념 중 합목적성, 적합성, 유용성은 디자인의 기능과도 직접 연관된다. 따라서 실제기능과 감각기능이 합목적적이고 적합하면 기능미가 나타난다고 할 수 있다. 사용자는 통합적, 맥락적 기능미의 경험을 통해 쾌와 즐거움을 얻게 되며, 바로 여기에 디자인의 미가 존재한다.
결론: 기존 디자인미학에서 다루지 않은 기능미를 기능과 미의 통합적 관점으로 재해석하여 디자인만의 미적 특성을 구별하고 이를 적용하는 디자인 미학적 접근을 시도하였다. 디자인에서 기능을 폭넓게 해석하여 통합적 관점으로 본다면 기능미가 디자인 미학의 중요한 개념으로 정립될 수 있다. 또한, 디자인의 미적 작용의 세부적 요인들을 고찰하여 기능미의 경험모델을 제시하였으며 이를 통해 디자인미학 연구의 지평을 넓히고자 하였다.

영어초록

Background: In the existing design aesthetics, the aesthetic concept of philosophy was introduced to interpret the beauty of design. In addition to the aesthetic concept, this paper interprets functions and functional beauty that could be the central theme of design aesthetics. Unlike the fine art of contemplative appreciation, design has functional beauty in the contextual experience process. This study also discussed the experience of functional beauty inherent in design and presented this experience as the main concept of design aesthetics.
Methods: Through literature research, this study found that the aesthetic concept of the existing philosophy is applied to the design aesthetic. The concept of function, which is an aesthetic object of design and the meaning of functional beauty has been extensively redefined. In addition, this study discussed the dimension and process of functional beauty experience based on various aesthetic studies and theories, and established an experience model of functional beauty.
Results: Sensual functions are an extended concept of functions along with practical functions. In design experience, these functions are integrated with user's perception and emotion, resulting in the judgment of functional beauty and emotional sensitivity. The purposiveness, suitability, and usefulness of the philosophic aesthetic are also related to the function of design. Therefore, if practical function and sensual function are purposive and appropriate, functional beauty can be revealed. The user achieves the agreeable and the pleasant through the experience of integrated and contextual functional beauty.
Conclusions: Functional beauty could be an important concept in design aesthetics if the interpretation of functions in design is viewed from an integrated perspective. This study presented the experience model of functional beauty by examining the detailed factors of the aesthetic effect of design, and intended to expand the horizon of research in design aesthetics.
