‘이응태묘 출토’한글 편지의 서체미 탐구 (A Study on the Calligraphic Beauty of the Letter from the Lee Eung-Tae Tomb)

초록

이 논문은 1586년 이응태 부인이 쓴 한글편지의 서체적 특징을 분석하고 이 편지가 갖는 서체적 의의를 밝힌 글이다. ‘이응태묘 출토 한글편지’는 경북 안동지역 지방사족인 이응태(1556년-1586년)가 31세의 이른 나이에 세상을 떠나자 그의 부인이 한글로 편지를 써서 남편의 무덤에 넣은 것이 최근 발견된 것이다. 그러므로 이 편지는 한글 창제 이후 비교적 이른 시기의 편지 글로서 그평범한 지방사족의 여인이 썼다는 점이 중앙이나 궁중에서 발달된 궁체와는 또 다른 서체의 미적 가치가 있으리란 점에서 자료적 가치를 갖는다. 이러한 점을 바탕으로 이 논문에서는 편지의 조형 구조를 중심으로 분석하여 몇 가지 서체적 특징을 밝혔다.
첫째, 편지의 서체는 점획을 부분적으로 연결 및 단순화시킨 반흘림체이며, 용필의 특징은 점획의 起筆과 收筆부분의 필봉을 변화 있게 다양한 방법을 사용하였다. 행필 과정은 완만한 곡선필획으로 연결느낌의 표현요소가 많다. 또한 필획의 대소․장단․조세․향배의 대비를 변화 있게 적용하되 자소간의 충돌을 피하였다. 종성 ㄹ ㅅ의 동일자를 비교․분석한 결과 방원 전절을 자유롭게 운필한 필의는 슬프지만 슬퍼만할 수 없는 절주의 리듬이 動한 가운데 靜하며, 필획의 형상은 소박 단순한 느낌이 자연스럽다.
둘째, 문자의 결구미는 단일문자의 공간분배와 자형의 특징을 분석한 결과 가로․세로 점획수의 비율에 따라 필획의 너비와 길이․굵기․기울기를 달리하여 공간분배의 疏密이 대비를 이루게 점획을 안배하였다. 그런데 점획의 위치와 방향의 안배가 통일성보다 상하좌우로 연면되는 글자에 따라 기울게 배자되므로 비대칭의 자형이다. 따라서 가로․세로의 장방형과 정방형 또는 삼각형․마름모형 등의 비정형적인 다양한 자형으로 소박한 자연미가 있다.
셋째, 문장의 장법미는 문자와 배행 그리고 문장의 중심축선이 단일문자의 가로 너비와 공간의 중앙을 기준하여 중심을 맞춘 것이다. 그러므로 비균형의 단일문자가 자연스럽게 배자된 배행의 축선은 가로 열은 맞추지 않았고 세로 행만 맞추었는데, 마치 어절별로 호흡하듯 중심에 맞추려 노력하였다. 문장의 중심축선은 필사자의 정감이 그대로 반영된 듯 시작부분은 긴장감이 느껴지며 점차 성정 내면에 깊숙이 흐르는 정감이 활달한 필의로 운필하였다. 이어서 짧게 감정의 기폭과정을 거쳐 절제된 여백의 여운으로 마무리를 한다. 순간순간 격정적 감정이 축선을 흔들어 놓고 있어 편지의 축선은 마음의 축선이 그려진 듯하다. 편지의 배행을 시선으로 따라가다 보면 띄워 쓰지 않았는데도 어절 어절에서 필자의 호흡이 느껴진다.
이응태 부인의 서간체를 분석한 결과 꾸밈없이 자유스럽게 필사 당시의 감정이 진솔히 표현된 창작성이 예술적 단계에 이르렀다는 것을 밝혀냈다. 점획마다 일점일획을 동일하게 쓴 것이 없으며 결구 형태 또한 다양한 비균형의 조화를 이룬 자형이다. 마치 자연사물이 각각 자신만의 독립된 생명체로 형상화된 듯 점획의 운필과 공간안배의 변화 있는 조형구조는 서예가들이 규범으로 삼을 원리를 갖추고 있는 예술성이 돋보이는 서체이다. 따라서 편지의 개성 있게 창작된 미적 구조는 오늘날 한글 서예학 및 다양한 서체개발 응용에 활용성이 크다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the calligraphy of a letter written in colloquial Korean by the wife of Lee Eung Tae to appreciate the contribution it made to the study of calligraphy. This letter is discovered recently from the tomb of a local gentry in Andong, Eung-Tae Lee (1566-1586). When he died prematurely at the age of 31, his wife wrote the letter and enclosed it in his casket. The first historical value of this letter lies in that it was written in a relatively early period after the invention of Korean Alphabet (Han-Geul) and the value is increased by the fact that it was written in the hands of a plain gentry woman in a region that did not show the distinctive influence of Gung-Che (The Court Style of Writing) developed in the Court of Seoul, the capital, which rendered it a unique calligraphic style and beauty. By analyzing the letter with the focus on the construction of the letter, this paper elucidates a few calligraphic characteristics of her style.
First, the general calligraphic style of the letter is half-cursive which loosely connects strokes in a simplified form. The usage of the brush is characterized by its versatility in using various Gi-phil (起筆: beginning of the stroke) and Su-phil (收筆: ending of the stroke). Hang-phil (the movement of brush) shows a smooth elliptical line that gives a sense of connectedness. Also while the size, length, breadth, and direction of the stroke are varied, there are no conflicts between individual syllables. If analyzing the last syllables of ㄹ ㅅ in comparison, the skillful usage of Bangwon (方圓: The mix of angular and round stroke) and Jeonjeol (轉折: The mix of horizontal and vertical stroke) shows the rhythm of the stroke that is passionate as well as calm in her restrained expression of her deep sorrow. The construction of strokes is natural in its modest simplicity.
Secondly, the analysis of the distribution and construction of characters in the final phrase shows that she distributed her strokes to contrast the So-mil (疏密: Space and Filling) by differentiating the breadth, length, strength and direction of each stroke. This makes an asymmetrical character forms since the location and direction of the strokes are skewed following the inclination of the vertically adjacent characters rather than the unity of the form. Therefore, the characters show various forms such as horizontal and vertical rectangles, squares, triangles or diamonds.
Thirdly, Jang-beob-mee (章法美: The beauty of the distribution) of the sentence is in that the characters, the line distribution and the central axis of individual-characters are aligned at the horizontal center of the space. She does not align horizontally as she naturally distributed the asymmetrical characters but shows an effort to center the aligned vertical lines as if she breathed out every phrase. The central axis of the sentence begins with a strain as if to reflect her subdued distress but gradually shows liberal and open strokes, letting her deep emotions out. It is yet followed by a restrained stroke that emphasizes the resonating beauty of the empty space after a brief moment of impassioned strokes. Seeing the axial lines in the letter shaken at times by her gushing-out emotions is like seeing her emotional axis tremble. Also one can somehow feel the breathing moment of the calligrapher when one follows the lines of the letter even though there is no separation between words or phrases.
The analysis of her calligraphy demonstrates that the wife of Lee Eung Tae's free and honest expression of her emotions at her writing made it a creative artistic achievement. Not one stroke shows a repetition and the final phrase reaches an asymmetrical harmony in various forms. As all elements and life forms in nature show their unique individualities, her construction displays such natural variations in the movement and distribution. That is a remarkable artistic achievement to be learned by any calligrapher. Therefore, the artistic construction created by her originality is important in current calligraphy and would have a wide application in the development of various calligraphic styles in the future.
