초록

이 논문의 의도는 이탈리아 르네상스의 철학자 마르실리오 피치노(Marsilio Ficino, 1433-99)의 철학에서 미 개념의 의미를 살펴보는 것이다.
플라톤과 플로티누스가 하나의 통일적인 근본사상으로 소생되어 있는 피치노의 사상은 미는 선의 광휘라는 플라톤주의적 성찰이 중심이 되고 있으며, 르네상스 예술에 광범위한 영향을 미쳤다.
인문주의와 <플라톤 아카데미>를 배경으로, 피치노는 ‘플라톤 신학’을 통해 플라톤 철학과 그리스도교 신학의 본질적인 일치를 증명하였다. 『플라톤 신학』의 부제는 영혼불멸성으로서, 영혼을 중심적 위치로 하는 우주론적 존재위계를 체계화하였다. 우주의 매개자로서의 인간영혼의 목표는 점진적인 내적 상승 즉 관조를 통한 신과의 합일이며, 이때 인간은 영혼불멸을 얻는다. 따라서 영혼불멸성은 인간의 존엄과 신성의 근거이다.
피치노의 우주론과 관련하여, 미는 능동적으로 사랑을 베푸시는 신이 맨 먼저 천사들을 비추고 나서 인간의 영혼을 조명하고 마지막으로 물질세계를 밝혀주는 신의 자태의 광휘이다. 이러한 미의 본질적 특성이 현상하기 위한 선결조건으로서 미의 또 다른 원리는 수적질서이다. 따라서 미는 ‘신성이 빛나는 비례’이며, 사랑을 불러일으킴으로써 인간영혼의 상승의 동인이다.
신적 선의 광휘로서의 미를 향유하려는 욕구인 사랑은 우주적 조화와 통일의 원리로서, 신적․예지적인 것과 감각적인 것을 매개한다. 사랑의 광기를 통하여 인간영혼은 신과 합일하고 지고한 행복과 영혼불멸을 얻는다. 바로 이것이 피치노의 ‘플라톤적 사랑’의 의미이다.
이로써 피치노 사상의 궁극 목표인, 플라톤주의 전통으로부터 유래하는 인간영혼의 신에게로의 내적 상승이라는 관념을 전제로 하고, 그의 철학의 지축인 영혼불멸성 및 미와 사랑의 관계와 관련하여, 피치노에게 미는 인간영혼의 내적 상승의 동인이다. 즉 피치노의 ‘플라톤적 신학’에서 미 개념의 실제적 의미는, 바로 인간이 신적 선함이 반사된 아름다운 사물을 봄으로써 불러 일으켜져서 자기 자신을 성찰하게 되고 내적으로 아름다운 선한 존재로 변형되어 자신의 신성을 발견하게 된다는 데 있다.

영어초록

The intention of this dissertation is to explore the meaning of beauty in the philosophy of the Italian Renaissance philosopher Marsilio Ficino(1433-99).
In Ficino’s writings Plato and Plotinus are revived as a unified doctrine, and the Platonic reflection that beauty is the splendor of the good is central. As such, Ficino’s thought had a vast influence on the culture and the arts of the Renaissance.
With humanism and the Platonic Academy in the background, Ficino proved, through ‘Platonic theology,’ the essential unity between Platonic philosophy and Christian theology. The subtitle of Theologia Platonica is “the immortality of the soul.” In this work, he systematized the cosmic hierarchy of being in which the soul occupies the central place. The goal of the human soul as the mediator of the universe is the gradual inner ascent, or unity with God through contemplation, and this is when man acquires an immortal soul. Accordingly, the immortal soul is the evidence of human dignity and divinity.
In connection with Ficino’s cosmology, beauty is the splendor of the divine countenance, in which the actively loving God first lights the angels, then illuminates the human souls, and lastly shines the material world. Another principle of beauty, as the precondition for the revelation of this beauty, is the mathematical order. Accordingly, beauty is the lucid proportion(lucida proportio), and it motivates the ascent of the human soul by arousing love.
Love, which is the desire for enjoying beauty as the radiance of divine goodness, is the principle for cosmic harmony and unity; it mediates the divine and intelligible, and the sensible. Through love, the human soul becomes a union with God and acquires beatitude and immortality. This is the meaning of the “Platonic love,” espoused by Ficino.
Thus, in terms of the ultimate goal of Ficino’s thought, which takes as its premise the notion of the inner ascent of the human soul to God from the Platonic tradition, and in connection with the immortality of the soul and the relationship between beauty and love, the two axes of his philosophy, beauty is the motive for the inner ascent of the human soul. The real meaning of Ficino’s concept of beauty consist in the very fact that man is provoked by seeing the beautiful things which reflect the divine good so that he reflects on himself, transforms himself into the internally beautiful being, or Good itself, and finally finds his own divinity.
