최종태 조각에 담긴 ‘화해(和解)’의 미(美) - 백제 마애불의 미의식을 중심으로 - (The beauty of reconciliation present within the sculptures of Choi Jongtae - Focusing on the aesthetic sense of a rock-carved Buddha from the Baekje era -)

초록

천주교 신자이면서 불교의 뜻에 공감하는 최종태는 한국적 자연주의와 화해의 정신을 중심으로 한국현대조각의 주체적 위상을 크게 높인 조각가이다. 그의 조각에서 가톨릭과 불교라는 두 가지 상반된 정신세계를 통합하는 화해의 도구는 ‘긍정적인 한국성(韓國性)’과 고귀하고 온화한 미소였다. 특히 그는 백제 마애불의 아름다움 안에서 한국의 독특한 문화적 기질은 물론 인간과 자연을 따뜻하게 포용하는 겸손한 마음을 찾았다. 작가가 제작한 성모상도 마애불의 형이상학적 특성(정신)과 형이하학적 특성(조형성)을 모두 내포한다. 한국의 문화적 형질에 내재한 깊은 정신성을 추구한 최종태가 바위라는 자연물에 의지해 자연과 일체가 되려는 마애불의 존재론적 속성에 관심을 두게 된 것은 어쩌면 당연한 것이었다. 작가는 오래전부터 백제의 마애불에서 깊은 영감을 받았다고 말하는데, 그의 조각이 형식적으로는 조각의 평면성을, 미학적으로는 자연주의 이념을, 예술 주체의 문제에서는 자국성(自國性)을 강하게 띠는 이유도 바로 여기서 찾을 수 있다.
이러한 예술적 토대 위에서 최종태가 평생에 걸쳐 실천한 ‘탈-경계적 의지’는 빈 공간을 채우며 당당히 서 있는 환조각의 입체성을 내 세우려 하지 않으며 부드러운 인간미를 추구하고자 하는 열망의 결과이며, 종교나 이념의 구분을 초월하는 ‘화해(和解)’의 미감을 통해 자연과 조화로운 균형 관계 안에서 인간성을 찾고자 하는 철학적 성찰의 결과이기도 하다. 솜씨로 지각되거나 힘이나 스케일로 지각되는 예술에서 보이는 경쟁의 긴장감을 구차한 것으로 여기며 작가가 추구한 것은 백제 마애불에서 느낄 수 있는 스스로 그러한 듯한 ‘절로의 맛’이었다. 가장 익숙하고 평범한 것 안에 담겨 있는 특별함의 가치를 발굴하고, 전통미술의 기품과 현대미술의 유연함을 동시에 발휘하는 최종태의 예술은 해학의 즐거움을 넘어 한국의 항구적 정신성을 인류 보편에 근접시킨다.

영어초록

Choi Jongtae, a sculptor who believes in Catholicism while at the same time sympathizing with Buddhism, has greatly raised the independent status of Korean modern sculpture by mainly focusing on Korean naturalism and the reconciliation spirit. In his sculptures, ‘positive Koreanness’ and the noble and gentle smile were used as reconciliation tools for integrating the two antithetical spiritual worlds, which are Catholicism and Buddhism. In particular, he found the unique cultural characteristics of Korea and its modest heart that embraces both the human and nature from the beauty of the Baekje rock cliff Buddhas. The statue of the Virgin Mary sculpted by the artist also connotes both of the metaphysical characteristic (spirit) and the antimetaphysical characteristic (plasticity) of a rock-carved Buddha. So, it seems quite natural that Choi Jongtae, who seeks a profound spirituality inherent in the cultural traits of Korea, became interested in the ontological properties of rock cliff Buddhas that try to integrate with nature by being carved on a rock, which is a natural object. According to the artist, he was deeply inspired by the Baekje rock cliff Buddha from a long time ago, and it is the main reason for the obvious presentation of flatness, the idea of naturalism from an aesthetic point of view, and the proudness of one’s own country in an artistic perspective in his sculptures.
The ‘boundary-free volition’ that has been realized from the lifetime period of Choi Jongtae based on such an artistic foundation does not highlight the three-dimensionality of the circular sculpture that stands in the middle of the empty space, while at the same time it is the outcome of the artist’s desire that pursues gentle humanity. It is also the result of the artist’s philosophical reflection for finding humanity within the harmonious relationship between people and nature through the esthetic sense of reconciliation that transcends any religious or ideological classifications. The artist considers that the tension caused by competition in art that is recognized by one’s skills, power, and scale is lame, and the idea pursued by the artist is the ‘artistic sense of itself’ as can be naturally seen in the Baekje rock cliff Buddhas. The artworks of Choi Jongtae that develop a specialness from the most familiar and ordinary things and demonstrate both the elegance of traditional arts and the flexibility of modern arts are approaching the permanent spirituality of Korea to humankind universally even beyond providing the joy of humor.
