변혁의 리미널리티와 해방의 커뮤니타스: 광주항쟁에 대한 새로운 접근 (Liminality of Transformation and Communitas of Liberation: A New Approach to the Gwangju Uprising)

초록

본고는 방주네프가 통과 의례의 한 단계로 제시하고 빅터 터너가 더욱 발전시킨 리미널리티 개념 그리고 터너 부부가 제안하고 다듬은 커뮤니타스 개념을 활용하여 1980년 광주항쟁을 분석해 보려는 최초의 시도이다. 리미널리티와 커뮤니타스 개념은 광주항쟁의 일상 초월적, 변혁적인, 의례적 측면들을 보다 섬세하게 포착하는 데 도움을 준다. 광주항쟁 당시 리미널리티와 커뮤니타스라고 부를 만한 현상들이 뚜렷하게 출현했다.
분리-전이-통합으로 구성되는 통과 의례 도식에서 분리 단계, 곧 구체제로부터의 분리 및 일상생활 초월은 리미널리티(전이 단계)로 진입하기 위한 필수적인 조건이다. 1980년 5월 광주에서는 자발적인 ‘의례적 분리’가 아닌 외부의 강압에 의한 ‘군사적-정치적 분리’가 이루어졌다. 광주에서 등장한 리미널리티는 순응적 주체들을 주조함으로써 기존 질서를 강화하는 ‘질서의 리미널리티’가 아니라 기존 체제에 대한 저항을 촉진하고 새로운 유토피아적 비전을 만들어 내는 ‘변혁의 리미널리티’였다. 광주 리미널리티의 변혁성은 항쟁이 지향했던 목적과 가치, 곧 최소 목표와 최대 목표를 통해 잘 드러났다. 항쟁의 비타협적이고 비극적인 종결 방식도 광주 리미널리티의 변혁성을 보강해 주었다.
광주 커뮤니타스는 무엇보다 ‘해방의 커뮤니타스’였다. 더 구체적으로 광주 커뮤니타스는 1980년 5월 18일부터 21일까지는 ‘항쟁의 커뮤니타스’와 ‘재난의 커뮤니타스’ 측면이 지배적이었고, 5월 22일부터 27일까지는 (항쟁-재난의 커뮤니타스가 지속되는 가운데) ‘자치의 커뮤니타스’와 ‘의례-연극의 커뮤니타스’가 새롭게 등장했다. 항쟁의 최후 단계에서는 ‘재난의 커뮤니타스’가 재차 출현했다. 광주 커뮤니타스의 가장 중요한 특징은 ‘자기통치(자치)의 커뮤니타스’인데 여기에서 광주 커뮤니타스의 해방적 성격이 가장 선명하게 드러나기 때문이다. 한편 ‘광주 커뮤니타스 이후’, 곧 광주의 ‘실존적 커뮤니타스’를 ‘이데올로기적 커뮤니타스’와 ‘규범적 커뮤니타스’로 계승하는 문제는 여전히 실천적 과제로 남아 있다.

영어초록

This is the first attempt to analyze the 1980 Gwangju uprising by using the notion of liminality, first introduced by Arnold van Gennep as an intermediate stage of the rite of passage, and developed by Victor Turner, and the concept of communitas developed by Victor Turner and Edith Turner. The concepts of liminality and communitas helps to capture the transcendental, transformational, and ritual aspects of the Gwangju uprising more delicately. Actually, at the time of the Gwangju uprising, phenomena that could be called liminality and communitas appeared distinctly.
The rite of passage consists of a three-step scheme of separation- transition-incorporation. Among these, the separation phase, separation from the structure and transcending daily life, is an essential condition for entering liminality. However, the separation in Gwangju in May 1980 was not a voluntary ‘ritual separation’ but a ‘military-political separation’ by external coercion. The liminality that emerged in Gwangju was not the ‘liminality of order’ that strengthened the existing order by producing compliant subjects, but the ‘liminality of transformation’ which promoted resistance to the existing system and created a new utopian vision. The transformative nature of the Gwangju Liminality was revealed through the purpose and value of resistance, that is, the minimum goals and maximum goals of the uprising. The uncompromising and tragic ending of the uprising has also reinforced the transformative character of the Gwangju Liminality.
Gwangju Communitas was, above all, ‘communitas of liberation’. More specifically, in the Gwangju Communitas, from May 18 to 21, aspects of ‘communitas of resistance’ and ‘communitas of disaster’ were dominant and from May 22 to 27, aspects of ‘communitas of self-rule’ and ‘communitas of rituals and play’ were strong. At the end of the uprising, ‘communitas of disaster’ appeared again. The most important feature of the Gwangju Communitas is found in ‘communitas of self-rule’. It is here that the liberating character of the Gwangju Communitas is most evident. On the other hand, the problem of the ‘post-Gwangju Communitas’, that is, the problem of succeeding ‘existential communitas’ of Gwangju into an ‘ideological communitas’ and an ‘normative communitas’ remains a practical task.
