빅터 터너의 의례이론에 의한 추모공간의 커뮤니타스 형성에 관한 연구 (A study on the formation of communitas in memorial spaces through Victor Turner's ritual theory)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 추모공간은 단순한 기념의 장소를 넘어 애도의 기능과 공동체적 유대 형성의 역할을 수행하는 공간이다. 추모공간에서의 의례적 행위는 방문자가 개인적, 집단적 애도를 경험하고 공동체적 정체성을 강화하는 과정에서 중요한 매개체로 작용한다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 추모공간에서 방문자가 수행하는 의례적 행위를 중심으로 커뮤니타스 즉, 공동체적 연대가 형성되는 과정을 단계적으로 분석해 추모공간이 집단적 트라우마 극복과 사회적 안정에 기여하는 공간으로 역할함을 재조명하는데 목적이 있다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 추모공간에서 방문자의 의례적 행위를 통해 공동체적 연대가 어떻게 이루어지는지 규명하기 위해 빅터 터너의 의례 이론을 적용하여 추모공간에서 커뮤니타스가 이루어지는 과정을 분석하였다. 먼저 문헌 연구를 통해 기존 의례의 개념과 특성을 정리하고 터너의 의례 이론, 추모공간에 대한 이론적 고찰을 진행하였다. 터너의 의례 이론인 분리-전이-재통합 단계에서 커뮤니타스 형성 과정을 분석해 추모공간에서는 어떻게 나타나는지 의례적 행위와의 관계를 통해 정리하였다. 이를 바탕으로 실제 추모공간에서 커뮤니타스가 형성되는 과정을 분석하기 위해 각 과정에서 나타나는 세부 단계를도출해 분석 틀을 설정하였고 사례의 범위를 집단 트라우마가 강조되는 사건을 가지며 의례적 행위가 이루어지는 국외 추모공간6곳으로 한정하였다. (결과) 이론 고찰을 토대로 추모공간에서 커뮤니타스가 형성되는 과정은 공간적 분절-감정 동기화-연대의 내재화 단계로 분석하였다. 먼저 공간적 분절은 ‘분리’ 단계로, 물리적 환경이 분리되어 심리적 변화에 진입하는 단계이다. 두 번째 감정 동기화는 ‘전이’ 단계로, 의례적 행위를 바탕으로 방문자 간의 공동 경험을 통해 감정 전이에 의한 연대감 부여과정이다. 세 번째 연대의 내재화는 ‘재통합’ 단계로, 개인과 공동체가 공유하는 가치가 자리 잡아 공동체적 정체성이 형성되고 기억이 지속되는 과정이다. 도출된 과정을 사례에 적용해 분석한 결과, 일상적 환경과 분리된 추모공간에서 방문자들이 의례적 행위를 공유함으로써 사회적 통합을 이루어 커뮤니타스가 형성됨을 알 수 있었다. (결론) 본 연구를 통해 의례 이론을 기반으로 추모공간이 공동체적 애도의 실천 공간으로서 집단 트라우마를 치유하는 역할로 수행함을 확인하였다. 이는 방문자가 특정한의례적 행위를 공동의 애도 경험으로 확장하여 사회적 연대와 심리적 안정감을 얻을 수 있다. 이에 따라 추모공간을 통해 집단적트라우마를 사회적 연대로 인해 극복할 수 있는 이론적 기반을 마련한다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Memorials are more than just places of remembrance; they are spaces that fulfill the functions of mourning and community bonding. Ritual behavior in memorial spaces is an important medium through which visitors experience personal and collective mourning and strengthen communal identity. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the process of communitas, or the formation of communal solidarity, by focusing on the ritual acts performed by visitors in memorial spaces, in order to shed new light on the role of memorial spaces as spaces that contribute to collective trauma overcoming and social stability. (Method) This study applies Victor Turner's ritual theory to analyze the process of communicating in memorial spaces in order to identify how communal solidarity is created through visitors' ritual acts in memorial spaces. First, we summarized the existing concepts and characteristics of rituals through a literature review and conducted a theoretical review of Turner's ritual theory and memorial spaces. Turner's ritual theory analyzed the process of communitas formation in the stages of separation, transition, and reintegration, and summarized how it manifests in memorial spaces through the relationship with ritual acts. Based on this, to analyze the process of communitas formation in actual memorial spaces, we set up a framework for analysis by deriving detailed steps that appear in each process, and limited the scope of the cases to six overseas memorial spaces where ritualistic acts are performed with events highlighting collective trauma. (Results) Based on the theoretical review, the process of communitas formation in memorial spaces was analyzed as spatial segmentation, emotional synchronization, and internalization of solidarity. First, spatial separation is the 'separation' stage, where the physical environment is separated and enters into psychological change. The second stage of emotional synchronization is the 'transfer' stage, which is a process of solidarity through the transfer of emotions through joint experiences between visitors based on ritualistic behavior. The third stage, internalization of solidarity, is reintegration, where the values shared by the individual and the community are embedded, a communal identity is formed, and memories are sustained. By applying the derived process to a case study, we found that in a memorial space that is separated from the everyday environment, visitors share ritualistic behaviors to socially integrate and create communitas.
(Conclusions) Based on ritual theory, this study confirms that memorial spaces play a role in healing collective trauma as a space for communal mourning practices. This means that visitors can extend certain ritualistic behaviors into a communal mourning experience, which can lead to social solidarity and psychological comfort. This provides a theoretical foundation for how memorial spaces can help people overcome collective trauma through social solidarity.
