역사문화환경 내 현대건축물의 디자인 적합성(compatibility)에 관한 연구 - 건축물 높이, 형상, 매스, 재료, 색채 요소를 중심으로 - (Compatible Design Elements of Contemporary Architecture in Historic Urban Environments)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 도시의 역사문화환경에 현대건축물을 신축하는 것은 모든 도시에서 매우 중요한 문제다. 건물을 디자인하는 건축가는 물론 이를 받아들이는 지역공동체도 새로 유입되는 현대건축물이 해당 지역의 고유 경관 문맥에 어떻게 잘 어울릴지를 고민해왔고, 이를 반영한 다양한 계획 및 디자인 지침, 규제 및 유도 방식이 제시되어 왔다. 이러한 노력은 조화로운 역사문화환경 조성을 유도하고 도시환경을 문화적으로 윤택하고, 풍요롭게 개선하는 효과를 가져오기 위함이다. 하지만 역사환경 문맥과의 적합성, 즉 ‘조화’라는 조건이 자주 언급되고 있음에도 이에 대한 구체적인 내용과 이것이 적용되는 방식에 대해 설득력 있는 실체 논의가 여전히 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 실증적 사례분석을 통해 도시 역사문화환경에 조화로운 현대건축물의 특성과 디자인 요소 간 관계에 대해 밝히고자 한다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 주요 세계 도시 역사환경 내 지어진 현대건축물 24개를 대상으로 현대건축물의 디자인 요소 특성을 형태, 매스, 높이, 재료, 색상의 요소로 구분하여 분석하고 빈도수가 가장 높은 항목의 순서대로 정리해 요소 간의 연관성을 살펴본다. 특히 재료와 색상의 경우 어도비 배색 분석 시스템을 활용해 색상에 대한 속성을 정량적으로 분석한 후 해석하였다. (결과) 역사도시환경 내 조화로운 현대건축물의 디자인 요소에 대한 논의는 높이가 주변과 유사한지 아닌지에 대한 것으로부터 시작해, 규모의 크기와 매스의 분절 여부로 이루어졌다. 현대건축물의 높이가 주변 건물들과 유사하면 가장 빠르게 조화로운 것으로 받아들여졌고, 높이가 주변과 상이하면서 규모가 주변에 비해 큰 경우 전체 매스의 분절과 보행자 레벨에서의 분절이 이루어질 때 조화롭다고 해석 가능했다. 특히 전체 매스를 분절하지 않더라도 보행자 레벨에서 분절하고 있다면 규모가 주변에 비해 큰 현대건축물이라도 이 또한 주변 환경과 조화롭다고 판단할 수 있었다. 또한 메탈, 유리, 필름, 노출콘크리트와 같이 매우 현대적이고 이질적인 재료를 사용면서 주변과 조화롭기 위해서는 재료에 사용되는 색상 값이 주변 건물과 유사해야 하며, 색상 값이 주변보다 높을 경우에는 채도와 명도를 조절함으로써 주변과 조화를 이루고 있었다. (결론) 도시 역사문화환경의 맥락에 적합한 현대건축물이 되기 위해서는 주변과 유사한 높이 및 매스 분절 요소가 가장 우선적으로 요구된다. 그리고 건물의 재료가 매우 현대적이고 이질적이더라도 색채 톤을 주변과 맞춤으로써 ‘적합성’을 유지할 수 있다. 특히 일본과 한국의 사례 11개가 모두 주변과 높이가 유사한 것으로 나타났으며, 매스를 대부분 분절하고 있는 것으로 미루어볼 때, 해외 연구에서 역사적 맥락에 적합한 디자인 요소로 규명된 여러 요소 중 높이, 매스, 색채가 한국에서도 우선순위 요소로서 어느 정도 유효하게 작동하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) While historic urban environments consist mainly of traditional pre-modern style architecture, contemporary architecture is continuously added to such environments and is strongly encouraged by organizations such as UNESCO and ICOMOS. The conditions required in the intervention of contemporary architecture include contextual compatibility with the surrounding historic environments. However, even though the condition of compatibility or harmony is often mentioned, there is still a lack of detail and how it is operating in the field. Therefore, this paper intends to clarify the characteristics and the relationships among the design elements by analyzing compatibly designed contemporary buildings in the changing historical and cultural environment of the city. (Method) This paper examines the attributes of compatible contemporary architectural design in urban historic environments. In particular, the height, form, mass, material, and color of such buildings are examined. Based on an empirical case analysis of twenty-four sample sites, this paper illuminates how “compatibility” operates in the field. (Results) Discussions around the design of compatibility in historic urban environments first concern whether the height of a building is similar to those that surround it, and then consider the scale and segmentation of the mass. The findings of this study reveal that the height, form, mass, material, and color of contemporary architecture in urban historic environments follow a specific hierarchical binding sequence. Height and mass are priorities for compatibility with the urban historic context . Buildings with a height similar to that of the surrounding buildings are regarded as the most harmonious and compatible. However, if a building’s height is different and it is larger than the surrounding constructions, it may be compatible through a segmentation of the mass at the pedestrian level. Meanwhile, although contemporary materials are used, the color, saturation, and brightness of the materials is similar to those in the existing streetscape. (Conclusions) The height and mass of contemporary buildings are the most important concerns regarding compatibility with historic urban environments. The use of contemporary materials that maintain the color, saturation, and brightness of materials used in the surroundings respects the existing streetscape. In particular, eleven cases in Japan and Korea were found to have similar heights to the surrounding buildings; the mass was mostly segmented when the new building was larger than the existing context; and height, mass, and color, which are the tangible elements that are most mentioned by many previous international studies, were verified as valid priority factors in Korea as well.
