고대인도 제식에서 물의 다양한 역할 (On the Various Ritual Roles of Water in Ancient India)

초록

베다시기까지 ‘물질로서 물’ 혹은 ‘원초적 물질로서 물’은 중성명사(우단, 우다카, 바르, 암바스, 살릴라) 단수형이 사용되었고, ‘살아있고, 영적이며, 신격과 관련된 물’은 여성명사(압) 복수형(아파스)이 사용되었다. 전자는 우주 생성 등을 설명하는 곳에서 주로 사용된 반면, 후자는 베다제식에서 중요한 역할을 한다.
『리그베다』에서 물은 부정을 씻는 정화, 제식에 합당하게 만드는 성화, 생기를 주며 새로운 탄생을 가능케 하는 존재로 칭송되며, 더 나아가 청원과 신앙의 대상인 어머니(인격화) 혹은 여신(신격화)으로 등장한다. 그런 내용들을 담은 찬가는 제의서에 만트라로 삽입되었을 뿐만 아니라, 각종 제식행위의 경전 근거가 되었다.
이것을 바탕으로 물의 역할은 고대인도 제식에서 다양한 방식으로 세분화되었다. 입문의례에서 물은 정화와 재생을 상징하는 목욕, 지식전달을 상징하는 물 붓기, 영적 양식으로서 물 마시기 등의 제식행위에 사용되었다. 이것들은 변용과정을 거치면서 가정 제식과 슈라우타 제식에서 수용된다.
하지만 입문의례, 가정 제식, 슈라우타 제식의 규정들은 배타적으로 적용된 것이 아니라, 서로 영향을 주고받으면서 세분화되면서 이론적 체계를 갖추게 된다. 이 규정들은 어떤 것은 원형 그대로, 어떤 것은 시대, 장소, 제식학파에 따른 비판적 수용과 변용을 반복하면서 계승되었다. 그 과정에서 새 규정이 첨가되거나 제식행위에 대한 부가적 설명이 덧붙여지기도 하였다. 그리고 물이 지닌 기본적 속성인 원초적 물질ㆍ정화ㆍ성화ㆍ생명ㆍ재생ㆍ순환이라는 이미지는 이론적 체계를 갖추고 종교ㆍ철학적 중요 학설로 전개되기도 하였다.

영어초록

There are many words for 'water' in Sanskrit. Until Vedic period, the singular form of neuter nouns(udán, udaká, vā́r, ámbhas, salilá) were used to refer to 'water as a matter' or 'water as a primitive matter'. And in generally the plural form of feminine nouns(áp), ā́pas was used to refer 'waters as a living one, spiritual one' or 'waters related with divinity'. The former was used in connection with the myths on cosmic creation, while the latter got more important roles in ancient Indian rituals.
Waters(ā́pas) were symbolized as the Mothers of Universe(impersonation) or Goddesses in ṚV. They had the power to remove the dirt of the secular world, to sanctify something for proper for a ritual, to give vitality, and the rebirth. Vedic priests praised and prayed ā́pas for purification, sanctification, longevity, and blessings for themselves and the a ritual patron.
And water got the various ritual roles in ancient India. For examples, in upanyana(the acceptance of a brahmacārín by a guru), various ceremonies were performed: a bathing for purification, sanctification and the second birth of the student, a drinking waters as a immortal brink, and a pouring of waters that symbolized to teach all the wisdom of Veda to the disciple.
In gṛhya rituals, a household(gṛhapati) uses water for ritual bathing(snāna), sipping water and rinsing the mouth(ācananīya), sprinkling water(prakṣaṇa), libations to deities(tarpaṇa) in saṃdhyopāsana.
In śrauta rituals, priests and a ritual patron(yajamāna) usually took a bath twice: at the beginning and at the end of the sacrifice. That wad a kind of symbolic ritual for purification, sacralization, and rebirth. And in main rites, priests used for water for purification of the utensils and the oblations, a ritual remediation for mistakes in the performance of the sacrifice, and control the heat of ritual fire.
But rules in upanyana, gṛhya rituals, and śrauta rituals were not applied exclusively, but were used in a complementary matter, were organized with mutually influenced each other. In the process, new ritual actions were added or subdivided on detailed theoretical or religious interpretations of the ritual. Furthermore the basic properties of water, such as a primitive matter, purification, sanctification, vitality, rebirth, and energy circulation, have been developed as a theoretical and philosophical important theory.
