서양인과 "거인"의 근대조선 여행기: The Korean Repository에 실린 기행문을 중심으로 (The “Giant” of the Western Travellers in The Korean Repository)

여행은 백지의 상태에서 미지의 장소를 경험하는 경우도 있지만 여행자들은 책을 통해 얻은 지식과 다른 여행자가 경험한 이야기를 통해 구성된 시각으로 응시를 하게 된다. 미국 사상가 에머슨은 이런 것을 “거인”으로 불렀다. 이 글은 국내 최초의 영문 월간잡지 The Korean Repository에 실린 근대조선의 기행문 일곱 편, 특히「백두산 여행」(A Trip To the Mont Blanc of Korea I, II)과「압록강 너머」(To the Yaloo and Beyond I, II, III)를 중심으로 이 “거인”의 본질, 즉 대상을 바라보는 주체의 시각을 매개하는, 그 기저에 있는 요인들을 점검한다. 또한 “거인”의 힘에도 불구하고 자발적인 주체의 직관적 인식이 동시에 어떻게 미세하게나마 드러나 있는지 탐구한다. 이 기행문에 대한 검토는 비숍이나 다른 유럽 여행자들의 기록과 별 차이가 없는, 같은 시선이 글에서 반복됨을 입증한다. 이들 기록은 에머슨이 언급한 “거인”―유럽인의 문화, 과학, 인종에 대한 우월감이 담겨 있는 시선―에 압도되어 있어 여행지에 대한 객관적 시각은 존재하지 않는다는 점을 상기시킨다. 즉 유럽인의 글에 재현된 조선의 모습은 서구 지식인의 자기 이데올로기적 투영에 불과함을 분명하게 보여준다.

영어초록

This paper attempts to reveal how the “giant” of Western travellers of the late 19th century prevails over their writings on Korea in the English magazine, The Korean Repository. The term “giant” that R. W. Emerson uses in his essay, Self-Reliance could refer to their reading experiences, the stories that they heard, and such contemporary discourse on racism, imperialism, and Christianity. And the “giant” mediates between self and sight and determines their present observation. Indeed, in the texts of To the Yaloo and Beyond, an American missionary, J. H. Wells attributes the stagnation of the civilization in Korea to the lack of Christianity and betrays what is embedded in his assertion. The British army officer, Cavendish, having travelled in Korea, describes the country as being in “three thousand years behind modern civilization.” This statement reflects the Western people’s refusal to acknowledge the East Asia as their equal. The East Asia remains ancient or at least pre-modern to their eyes. His travel companion, Captain Goold-Adams follows Oppert’s racial description that Koreans are of two races: Mongolians and Caucasians, and colonial racism is also apparent in his description. G. S. Gale, a Canadian missionary and Jack London, an American correspondent detail the problems of sanitation and laziness which are repeatedly mentioned in other writings. The “giant” of contemporary discourses contaminates the travellers’ eye and their texts tend to rewrite what other travellers have said before. Interestingly, Gale’s later texts show his changed perceptions toward the Korean people and reveals his sympathy and respect as do Isabella Bishop’s writings. However, their degree of conversion seems to be rather limited. For complete conversion means to deny the civilization that creates and shapes their own selves and identities. The Western travellers’ identical representations of Korea confirm that those texts are merely the reflection of the western ideology.
