‘운주사환은천조(雲住寺丸恩天造)’ 문자기와의 새로운 판독과 해석 (Unjusa Hwan-ŭn-ch’ǒn-jo(雲住寺丸恩天造) New Reading and Interpretation of the Inscription on an Inscribed Roof Tile)

초록

화순 운주사는 천불천탑이라고 불리는 다양한 석불석탑으로 구성된 사찰로 널리 알려졌지만 건축물이 있던 구역이 별도로 구획ㆍ분리되어 존재하였다. 고려 11세기 초 이전에 창건되어 16세기 조선시대까지 존속하였던 건축물 구역의 발굴조사에서 문자기와 4건이 출토 되었다. 이 중 사명(寺名)이 포함된 ‘운주사환은천조’(雲住寺丸恩天造) 문자기와가 다량으로 출토되어 주목된 바 있다.
‘雲住寺丸恩天造’ 문자기와는 간단한 문자 구성임에도 ‘雲住寺’를 제외한 ‘丸恩天造’ 4자의 정확한 뜻을 밝히기 쉽지 않은 것으로 전제되고 있다. 특히 ‘丸’자는 해석이 난이한 문자로서, ‘丸’자가 아닌 ‘’자 형태로 양각되었으며 서체 등의 재검토가 대두되었다. 따라서 본 논문은 ‘’자에 대한 서체, 서법(書法) 등 금석적인 관점과 문자기와의 용례, 오독(誤讀) 사례 등을 분석 검토하게 되었으며, 그 결과 ‘’자는 기와를 의미하는 ‘瓦’자로 판독하게 되었다. 즉 ‘雲住寺丸恩天造’는 ‘雲住寺瓦恩天造’로 판독하는 것이 타당하다고 판단한 것이다.
문자기와는 일반적으로 연호, 제작자 등 기념적인 표식의 내용이거나 찬양 축원을 담은 길상(吉祥)적 의미를 가진 문자로 구성되어 있다. ‘雲住寺瓦恩天造’ 해석의 중심 단어는 ‘恩天’이며, 기념적인 표식의 내용이라면 ‘恩天’은 기와를 제작한 연호(年號)ㆍ인명ㆍ승려명ㆍ불경ㆍ건물명ㆍ기관명 등의 명칭이 될 수 있다. 인명(人名)이라면 ‘운주사의 기와는 ‘恩天’이라는 이름의 와장(瓦匠) 또는 승려가 만들었다.‘ 고 해석할 수 있다. 길상적 의미의 문자기와로 제작되었다면 ‘恩天’은 ‘하늘(신)의 은덕’, ‘황제의 은덕’이란 의미가 된다. 그리고 ‘雲住寺瓦恩天造’는 ‘운주사 기와는 하늘(신)의 은덕 또는 황제의 은덕으로 만들었다.’ 고 해석할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Hwasun Unjusa temple is mainly known for the many stone pagodas and stone statues of Buddha that are found inside the temple grounds, but there is also a separate area in its premises that was intended for the temple buildings. The construction of this area was completed in the beginning of the eleventh century, during the Koryǒ dynasty period, and the temple there functioned continuously up until the sixteenth century. It is precisely in this area that in four instances inscribed roof tiles were discovered during excavation works. Among these tiles a certain type where the name of the temple is written in the inscription Unjusa hwan-ŭn-ch’ǒn-jo (雲住寺丸恩天造) was found in larger quantities at the excavation sites, calling for scholarly attention.
The text on this type of inscribed roof tiles has a fairly simple structure, and yet save for the first three characters unjus atemple it has been considered a difficult task to determine the exact meaning of the inscription. Especially problematic is the case of the fourth character hwan(丸) which was engraved in a peculiar shape – . The interpretation of this character has been a rather difficult matter, so a new analysis and reconsideration of the calligraphy style used is needed. After performing an epigraphic analysis of the character by carefully considering the calligraphy style and calligraphy principles, as well as other examples of usage and misinterpretation of characters carved on other inscribed roof tiles, this article argues that the character should, in fact, be read as wa(瓦), which means “roof tile”. In other words, the inscription changes from Unjusa hwan-ŭn-ch’ǒn-jo(雲住寺丸恩天造) to Unjusa wa-ŭn-ch’ǒn-jo(雲住寺瓦恩天造).
In most cases, the contents of the text found on inscribed roof tiles could either have a commemorational character, recording the name of the maker, the year, etc, or it could also function as a charm or auspicious token of a sort. In the revised inscription, the focus of attention becomes the word ŭn-ch’ǒn(恩天). If we understand the text as a record, then these two characters would fall in one of the following name categories: era name, name of a person or a Buddhist monk, reference to Buddhist scriptures, name of a building, name of an institution etc. Therefore, the whole inscription would read: “The roof tiles of Unjusa temple were made by the tile craftsman (or the Buddhist monk) Ŭnch’ǒn.” In case the inscribed tiles were meant to serve as an auspicious token, however, the word ŭn-ch’ǒn(恩天)would mean “the favor of Heaven (God)” or “the favor of the Emperor”, and the sentence would have the following interpretation: “The roof tiles of Unjusa temple were made with the favor of Heaven/the Emperor.”
