초록

Shen, congwen(沈從文) is a rare author who had created colorful female characters in the modern Chinese literary history. A variety of female characters appear in his stories, and these women lead their unique story one another as a heroine of the story.
One of the remarkable features that a female character has in his story is that a character is simple and abstract. Such feature is related with what the female character created by Shen, congwen reflects not an actual woman but anima discovered in the process of literary creation divine nature of goddess.
This study examined how the goddess of Shen, congwen was born and what features the trace of goddess reflected in a female character has in accordance with his each composition period. As a result, the goddess was born by combination of shamanism of Xiangxi(湘西) region and the anima discovered by an author in his creative process. And the goddess casts her shadow into a female character as different images in accordance with his situation. The female characters at the first half of his literary activities had projected the shadow of ‘the goddess of love and death’. It is involved in what the author who escaped from violent society had sought a life of a perfect type in literary space. And the female characters at the last half of his literary activities had thrown the shadow of ‘the goddess of Love and Beauty’. It is concerned with what Shen, congwen had succeeded to the enlightenment spirit of May Fourth Movement(五四運動)happened in China by securing a stable position socially.
In conclusion, Shen, congwen’s literature was oneinvocatory rite of a would-be (spiritualistic) medium which tried to dream eternity accepting death in a lifeand a magnificent ceremony to welcome Aphrodite who is the goddess of beauty and love.
