초록

체원은 고려 후기 화엄교단에서 주도적인 역할을 담당했던 승려로 신라 의상(義相)의 「백화도량발원문」이 그의 『백화도량발원문약해』를 통해 세상에 알려졌다. 간략한 해석이라는 뜻의 『약해(略解)』는 「백화도량발원문」의 주석서로 체원의 해설을 통해 의상의 관음신앙을 살펴볼 수 있으며, 체원이 어떻게 이해하고 풀어내고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 발원문에 대한 체원의 이해에도 접근할 수 있다. 『약해』는 총 20장으로 이루어져 있으며 크게 서론과 본론으로 나눌 수 있다. 체원은 서론에서는 최치원의 「의상본전(義相本傳)」을 인용하여 의상의 전기(傳記)를 소개하였고, 본론에서는 「백화도량발원문」이라는 제목과 본문을 해설하였다. 이 글에서는 제목과 본문에서 귀의에 해당하는 발원문의 앞부분을 살펴볼 것이다. 발원문에서는 제목에서 볼 수 있듯이 관세음보살의 주처(住處)인 ‘백화도량’을 발원자가 귀의하는 대상으로 삼고 있다. 의상(義相)은 관음(觀音)의 대원경지와(大圓鏡智)와 제자의 성정본각(性靜本覺)을 먼저 관(觀)함으로써 성인과 범부가 비록 의보(依報)와 정보(正報)는 같지 않지만 하나의 대원경(大圓鏡)을 벗어나지 않는다고 말한다. 이때의 관(觀)은 관하는 주체의 지혜로서 망상과 집착을 여의고 허공과 같이 청정하여 걸림이 없는 경지로 ‘지(止)’의 실천을 포함한 지혜이다. 이러한 진관(眞觀)으로 관(觀)하면 관음의 대원경지와 제자의 성정본각은 성기법성(性起法性)이어서 서로 통하는 것이다. 따라서 스승[관음]과 제자[의상]는 각자의 자리를 움직이지 않고서도 융섭하여 하나가 되므로 귀의의 대상과 귀의의 주체라고 할 것도 없어지게 되는 것이다. 결론부터 말하자면 체원이 바라본 관음은 백화도량에서 머물며 대비행 법문을 설해 중생을 구제하고 보살도를 행하는 분이 아니다. 발원을 하는 범부인 제자 또한 관음과 다르지 않은 것이다.

영어초록

Chewon was a Buddhist priest who played a leading role in the Avatamska order during the second half of Goryeo. His Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun Yakhae made Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun by Uisang of Silla known to the world. Meaning a brief interpretation, Yakhae is an annotation book for Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun and offers a chance to examine Uisang's Avalokitesvara belief through Chewon's commentaries. The book also helps readers approach Chewon's understanding of Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun by examining how he understood and unraveled it. His Yakhae consists of a total of 20 chapters and can be mostly divided into the introduction and main body. In the introduction, Chewon introduced Uisang's biography by quoting Choi Chiwon's Uisangbonjeon. In the main body, he offered his commentaries about the title and body of Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun. This study examines the front part of Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun, which corresponds to the devotion in the title and body. As the title indicates, Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun presents "Baekhwadoryang," the main residence of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, as the object that the prayer is devoted to. By first looking into Avalokitesvara's Daewongyeongji and his pupil's Seongjeongbongak, Uisang states that even though a saint and an ordinary person share no same Uibo and Jeongbo, they remain within the single Daewongyeong. His viewpoint represents the wisdom of the subject who looks into them. The wisdom includes the practice of "Ji" at the stage of discarding delusions and obsessions, being clear like the air, and having no obstacles. When one looks in this true outlook, Avalokitesvara's Daewongyeongji and his pupil's Seongjeongbongak understand each other since they are both Seonggibeopseong. As a consequence, the master (Avalokitesvara) and his pupil (Uisang) achieve Yungseop and become one without even leaving their respective places, which eliminates any distinction between the object and the subject of devotion. In conclusion, the examination of Avalokitesvara by Chewon was not to save people but to perform the path of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva by staying at Baekhwadoryang and explaining Buddhist writings. His pupil, who is an ordinary person to do Balwon, is no different from Avalokitesvara.
