마닐라 선언문을 중심으로 본 로잔 제2차 마닐라 대회의 의의 (The Significance of the Second Lausanne Congress in Manila Focusing on the Manila Manifesto)

초록

로잔 제2차 대회인 마닐라 대회에서 제시한 마닐라 선언은 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서처럼 성경 전반의 요절들을 인용하면서 만들어진 전도 지침서와도 같은 문서로 로잔언약과 케이프타운 서약을 잇는 가교의 역할을 감당한 문서이다. 따라서 로잔운동의 역사와 신학을 이해함에 있어서 마닐라선언은 아주 중요한 문서 중의하나이다. 이 논문은 이처럼 중요한 마닐라 선언문을 깊이 있게 분석하면서 마닐라 대회의 의의를 평가한 연구이다. 이 논문은 마닐라 선언의 주된 강조점을 1. 복음전도의 긴급성과 이를 위한 성도의 희생적 헌신 강조, 2. 증인의 윤리성에 대한강조, 3. 교회의 대 사회적 책임에 대한 강조, 4. 미전도 종족 선교전략과 성령 사역의 필요성 제시, 5. 온전한 복음에 대한 강조 등으로 정리하였다. 그리고 제4장에서는 마닐라 대회의 강점을 분석하면서, 동시에 로잔운동이 태동될 당시 지녔던 세계복음화의 과제를잘 감당하기 위해서 여전히 고민해야 할 측면들이 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 특별히 로잔이 사회적 책임을 강조하면서도 복음의 우선성과긴급성에 대해서는 분명한 입장을 간직하는 것이 필요하지 않는지함께 고민할 것을 제안하였다.

영어초록

The Manila Manifesto, presented at the second Lausanne Congress held in Manila, is a document akin to an evangelism guidebook, crafted with references to key Bible verses, much like the Westminster Confession of Faith. It served as a bridge connecting the Lausanne Covenant and the Cape Town Commitment. As such, it is one of the key documents for under standing the history of the Lausanne Movement. This paper deeply analyzes the Manila Manifesto and evaluates the significance of the Manila Congress. The paper outlines the main emphases of the Manila Manifesto as follows: (1) the urgency of evangelism and the need for sacrificial commitment by believers, (2) the emphasis on the ethical conduct of witnesses, (3) the church’s social responsibility, (4) the presentation of missionary strategies for unreached people groups and the need for the work of the Holy Spirit, and (5) the emphasis on the whole gospel. In Chapter 4, the paper analyzes the strengths of the Manila Congress, while also exploring the areas the Lausanne Movement still needs to address in order to faithfully fulfill its task of world evangelization. Specifically, it suggests reflecting on whether Lausanne, while emphasizing social responsibility, should continue to maintain a clear stance on the primacy and urgency of the gospel. As a result of this study, I would like to evaluate that the Manila Declaration was an appropriate declaration that at tempted to balance social responsibility while clarifying the priority of evangelism in the Lausanne Movement. Of course, there are still things to consider, but it appears to be a document that basically tried to capture the spirit of the Lausanne Movement. In this regard, I hope that the Lausanne Movement will continue to uphold the spirit of the Manila Declaration in the future. It is important for the Lausanne Movement to emphasize social responsibility while also maintaining a clear stance on the primacy and urgency of the gospel. The root of all problems in this world ultimately began with humanity, having turned away from God and trying to become gods themselves; therefore, the solution to all these problems lies in restoring humanity’s relationship with God, as consistently taught in the Bible. In this sense, while the church must serve the world and engage in many efforts for its transformation, the most essential and effective work that the church can and must do is to proclaim the gospel, which is the fundamental driving force for the transformation of the world. Thus, I think that priority and urgency should be placed on mission of Lausanne. With this direction, I expect that Lausanne will continue to play a central role in the global evangelization movement.
