초록

본고는 『문장』지의 기행문 연구이다. 기행문은 경험적 사실성과 주관적 진정성을 중심으로 하는 근대적 글쓰기의 일종이다. 『문장』의 기행문을 통해, 물리적 공간 이동 및 이에 대한 표상으로서의 ‘심상지리’를, 식민지 시대 말기의 지역표상과 역사적 시간의식의 관점에서 논했다.
중국 여행의 시·공간 지리학의 의미화 논리는 다음과 같다. ‘현재’의 경성에서 출발해, ‘과거’의 퇴락한 북경을 거쳐, 또 다른 ‘현재-미래’의 조선인촌을 거쳐, 무시간적 ‘영원성’의 지점인 전쟁터를 거친다. 이 시·공간은, 기행문을 쓰는 글쓰기 주체의 입장에서는 서울의 ‘병든 나’로부터 출발해 과거의 웅대한 대륙을 전리품으로 획득하고, 제국처럼 ‘강건해진 나’로 돌아오는 의식의 여행이기도 하다.
이처럼 중국지역 기행문이 공간의 분할 및 시간의 차등화를 통해 미래적 전망을 분리, 할당하는 방식이라면, 일본과 서구 지역 기행문은 이와 다른 시간 지리학을 보인다. 독일 기행문은 ‘서구’를 지구상에 특정한 지역을 개인이 향유하는 방식을, 동경 기행문은 일본의 동경(도쿄)을 ‘현재적 동시간대’로 서술하는 방식을 보여준다. 이런 동시간대적 현재 체험 중심의 지역 전유는, 이전에 서구가 가졌던 ‘문명의 권위’를 탈각하고 개인이 체험하는 한정된 특수지역으로 의미화하는 것이다.
이는 역사주의적 발전론상 ‘서구→일본→조선’이라는 서열에서 벗어나 서구, 일본, 조선을 강력한 ‘동시간성’ 속에서 표상하는 것이다. 이런 해외기행문의 심상지리는 서구의 지위 변경, 일본과의 평등성의 가상을 ‘시간’과 ‘지역’을 통해 표상하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 서구를 전유하는 ‘현재적 체험’ 중심의 시간은, ‘과거→현재→미래’라는 발전의 환상을 중국(동양)을 분할 전유하는 미래의 ‘대동아’에 할당하는 것이다.
이와 같은 중국의 공간 분할(북경, 조선인촌, 전쟁터) 및 이를 시간적 분할을 통해 역사적 단계론으로 전치하는 방식은, 서구와 일본의 동시간대적 전유와 동전의 앞뒷면으로, 조선의 자기인식과 ‘대형상화’ 관계에 있다.
『문장』에 실린 국내 고도(古都) 기행문은 자기상 형성에 나타나는 ‘직접적 선택과 삭제’의 기제를 보여준다. 부여와 평양을 중심으로 씌어진 『문장』지 국내 기행문은, 내선일체의 역사성을 확인해주는 조선 내부의 고적 설정과 근대 자본주의적 개발주의가 관광을 통한 지역 소비의 방식을 보여준다. 구체적으로 이 두 지역에 대한 국내 기행문은 하나는 과거를 현재화하는 시간해석을 통해 새로운 가상공간(내-선)을 창출하고(부여), 다른 하나는 국내 지역에서 이데올로기를 선택적으로 특화해 과거(단군)을 삭제하고 대신 개발과 발전, 탐험이라는 미래로의 기대지평이라는 근대주의적 시간지리학(평양)을 보여주는 것이다.
따라서 『문장』의 입장, 정체성의 준거로서의 미적, 조선적인 것으로서의 이미지는, 국내 지역 전유의 이와 같은 이데올로기적 변동과 서로 상보적으로 되비춰져야만 하고, 또한 이 국내기행문과 대비적으로 결합된 해외기행문의 외부 전유의 자장 속에서 고려되어야하는 것이다.

영어초록

This article is a study on the travel writings in Munjang. A travel is a kind of a modern writing, focused in the empirical reality and subjective authenticity. From the travels in Munjang, the transfer of physical space and 'geographical feature of imagery' as a representation of it, are discussed on a standpoint of the regional representation at the end of the colonial period and historical and temporal consciousness.
The following is the logic behind making meaning of temporal and spatial geography on traveling in China. From Kyungsung of the 'present,' through dilapidated Beijing of the 'past' and Korean residence town of the 'present-future,' a battlefield, a spot of timeless 'eternity,' is passed. This time and space are for the traveling of consciousness, on the writer's view, departing from 'ailing I' in Seoul, acquiring the vast land in the past as a trophy, and coming back to 'robust I' like an empire.
In this manner, while the travels in China show a way of separating and sharing the prospects for the future through division of the space and the differentiation of the time; the travels in Japan and the Western area show different way of temporal geography. The travels in German show 'the Western world' on how an individual enjoys a certain area in the world, and the travels in Tokyo show how to write on Tokyo(Japan) in the 'contemporaneity of the present.' This way of appropriation of the region, focused on the contemporaneous experiences of the present, is making meanig of a certain area for each individual's experiences, free from 'the authority of civilization' of the Western world in the previous.
Free from the order of 'the Western→Japan→Chosun' on the historical development, this is representing the Western world, Japan, and Chosun within the strong 'contemporaneity.' The geographical feature of imagery in these travels in foreign countries can be something that represents the virtuality on changes in rank of the Western and equality with Japan, through 'time' and 'region.' The time, centered in 'experiences of the present,' is something that assigns the fantasy on the development of 'past→present→future,' future 'the Great East Asia' dividing and appropriating China(the Orient).
The way of transposing to the historical stage, through the division of places in China(Beijing, Korean residence town, and a battlefield) and its temporal separation, is like a relationships between heads and tails of coins and contemporaneous appropriation of the Western and Japan; and has 'formative' relationship with self-consciousness of Chosun.
Travels in Korea's old capitals in Munjang show the mechanism of 'direct selection and removal' in the process of self-image formation. This travels in the domestic area, especially written on Buoyu and Pyeongyang, establishment of historical remains inside Chosun, which confirms the historicity of the unification between Japan and Korea, and the way of consumption across the region through travel industry by the modern capitalistic developmentalism. Specifically, of the travels on these two areas, one creates new virtual space(Japan-Korea) by the interpretation of time, which contemporizes the past into the present; the other removes the past(Dangun) by specializing ideologies in the domestic areas, and shows the modernistic temporal geography(Pyeongyang), that is the expected horizon toward the future of development, improvement, and exploration.
Therefore, an image as of aesthetic and of Chosun on the authority of an identification, on the standpoint of Munjang, should be flashed back complementarily with this ideological changes in the appropriation of domestic areas. This image should also be considered within the frame of outside appropriation, comparatively combined with these travels.
