朝鮮後期~20世紀 初 華角工藝品의 鳳凰紋 硏究 (A Study on Phoenix Pattern of Hwagak Craft from Late Chosun Period to Early 20th Century)

초록

화각공예란 소의 뿔인 牛角을 펴서 투명하게 한 후 그 위에 여러 가지 색채로 그림을 그린 다음 이를 백골에 뒤집어 붙여 표면에 그림이 드러나도록 장식하는 공예를 말한다. 화각공예의 기원은 복채기법과 관련지어 살펴볼 수 있으며, 이를 통해 화각공예는 고려시대 나전칠기에 사용된 대모 복채기법을 연원으로 하여 발생한 것으로 여겨진다. 화각공예의 제작에 관해서는 먼저 조선후기 백과사전식 저서들을 통해 살펴볼 수 있는데, 徐有榘의 『林源經濟志』및 李圭景의 『五洲書鍾』에 牛角類을 다루는 방법이 기록되어 있어 화각공예 관련기법으로 주목된다. 화각공예품의 제작과정은 복잡한 공정을 거치는데 이는 다른 공예에서는 볼 수 없는 화각공예만의 독특한 방식이라 할 수 있다. 화각공예품의 종류로는 수장용 가구, 침선용구, 문방용구 등이 있는데 본고에서는 이들 중 봉황문이 다수 시문된 화각함, 화각장, 화각농, 화각베갯모를 중심으로 특징을 살펴보았다. 이들 화각공예품의 특징은 방형 각지의 연속적인 배치, 우골계선의 사용, 화려한 오방색 계열의 설채 등으로 요약 할 수 있다. 화각공예품에 시문된 문양에 관해서는 봉황문을 선정하여 살펴보았는데 봉황문은 크게 단봉문, 쌍봉문, 군봉문의 세 가지 유형으로 나눌 수 있다. 단봉문은 단독의 봉황문이 시문된 형식, 봉황이 천도나 서초를 물고 있는 銜鳥文 형식, 봉황의 등에 신선이 타고 있는 형식 등으로 나눌 수 있다. 첫 번째의 문양은 부귀 등을, 두 번째와 세 번째의 문양은 장수 등을 상징한다. 쌍봉문은 한 쌍의 봉황을 대칭으로 시문한 형식 및 한 쌍의 봉황과 오동나무, 대나무를 시문한 형식 등으로 나눌 수 있다. 전자의 문양은 부부화합 등을 상징하며, 후자의 봉황문은 『詩經』 및 陸佃의 『埤雅』구절에 근거하여 明代 이후에 유행한 길상문의 영향을 받은 것이다. 군봉문으로는 암수 봉황과 아홉 마리의 새끼를 묘사한 구추봉문이 있는데 부부화합, 자손 번창 등을 상징한다. 궁중유물에 시문된 봉황문은 왕이나 왕후의 상징 및 태평성세, 부부화합, 왕실 자손의 번창의 기원 등과 관련있는 것으로 여겨진다. 민수용 화각공예품에 시문된 봉황문은 현실에서 염원하는 장수, 부귀, 부부화합, 자손 번영 등의 길상적 의미를 문양에 투영한 것으로 생각된다. 한편 화각공예품의 봉황문은 조선 19세기~20세기 초의 나전칠기, 자수, 도자기 등의 공예품의 봉황문과 양식 및 상징성을 공유하고 있다. 따라서 화각공예는 동시대 공예품과 궤적을 같이하는 시대적 보편성을 반영하면서 독자적인 발전을 이룩해 온 우수한 공예라는 것을 알 수 있다. 끝으로 근대기 화각공예에 관한 더 많은 자료의 발굴과 현대의 화각공예에 관한 연구는 차후의 과제로 남겨두고자 한다.

영어초록

Hwagak (華角) craft refers to the ox horn inlaying craft, wherein the horns are flattened and grinded into transparent paper-thin veneers, the rear side of which are painted with patterns using various colors, and the rear side of the painted veneers is glued on wooden items such that the patterns appear on the front side of the veneers. The origin of the hwagak craft can be traced to a bokchae (伏彩: painting the rear side of the materials) technique; the hwagak craft is considered to be closely related with a daemobokchae (玳瑁伏彩: painting the rear side of a tortoise shell) technique used in a najeonchilgi (螺鈿漆器: lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl to making wooden furniture) of the Koryo (高麗) period. The methods for treating the ox horn recorded in “Imwonkyungjeji (林園經濟志)” by Seo, Yu Goo (徐有榘) and “Ojooseojong (五洲書種)” by Lee, Kyu Kyung (李圭景) are considered to be related to the hwagak craft technique. The production process of the hwagak artifacts goes through the multiple steps due to the use of many materials including the ox horns, which is a Korean unique feature that cannot be seen in the other artifacts. The kinds of the hwagak artifacts are storage furniture, needlework tools, stationery, etc. In this paper, the characteristics of hwagak boxes, hwagak clothing chests, hwagak pillow ends with the phoenix patterns inlaid are investigated. The characteristics of the hwagak artifacts can be summarized as the consecutive attachment of the square ox horn veneers, the reinforcement of the ox horn veneers using ox bone boundary lines, the use of the five cardinal colors, etc. Further, out of various patterns inlaid on the hwagak artifacts, the phoenix (鳳凰) patterns are studied. The phoenix patterns can be roughly classified into three types of a single phoenix pattern, a double phoenix pattern and a multiple phoenix pattern. The single phoenix pattern can be divided into a type where only a single phoenix is inlaid, a hamjomun where a phoenix holds a heavenly peach or an auspicious herb in its beak, and a type where a hermit rides on a phoenix's back. The first type symbolizes the wealth and honor, and the second and third types the longevity. The double phoenix pattern can be divided into a type where two phoenixes are inlaid symmetrically and a one where two phoenixes are inlaid together with a paulownia tree and a bamboo. The former symbolizes the harmony of husband and wife, and the latter is influenced by the good omen patterns of the Ming period based on the “Shijing (詩經)” and the “Piya (埤雅)” of Lu Dian (陸佃). As for the multiple phoenix pattern, a guchubongmun (九雛鳳文) where mother, father and nine baby phoenixes are depicted is given as an example, which symbolizes the harmony of husband and wife and the prosperity of offspring. The phoenix patterns inlaid on the royal artifacts symbolize a king or a queen. The phoenix patterns inlaid on the commoner artifacts are considered to give the meaning of a good omen such as the longevity, the wealth and honor, the harmony of husband and wife, and the prosperity of offspring, which are desired in the real life, to the patterns. Meanwhile, the phoenix patterns researched in this paper have the style and symbolism in common with those of the folk paintings and the other artifacts such as the najeonchilgi, embroidery, pottery, etc. Therefore, it can be inferred that the hwagak craft is the excellent original one developed by having the lateral relationship with the other artifacts and folk paintings of the same period. Finally, the research on the modern and contemporary hwagak craft should be conducted in the near future.
