백제 연화문수막새 변화의 시작과 전개 (The Beginning and Development Process of Changes in a Roof-end Tile with Lotus Design in Baekje)

초록

이 글에서는 연화문수막새 변화의 시작을 파악하기 위하여 변화 요인과 요소를 검토하고, 그 결과 정립된연화문수막새의 형태를 남조 연화문수막새와 비교하여 정리하였다. 먼저 변화 요소와 요인을 파악하기 위하여 한성기와 웅진기의 연화문수막새를 비교·검토하였다. 변화 요소는 문양뿐만 아니라 제작기법에서도 관찰되었다. 변화 요인으로는 남조 제와술이 많은 영향을 미쳤던 것으로 추정된다. 즉 연화문수막새의 변화와 정립은 새로운 요소의 선택과 수용 과정을 거치며 이루어졌던 것으로 추정하였다.
또한 이후에도 이어지는 연화문수막새의 전개 과정에 대하여 정형화되고 있는 제작방식을 단일화라는 관점에서, 다양한 형식으로 분화한 연화문을 다변화라는 관점에서 살펴보았다.한성기에는 신기술의 유입이라는 과정을 거치며 다양한 제작기법이 공존했던 것으로 추정된다. 이후 웅진기를 거치며 사비기에는 다수의 건물이축조에 따라 기와도 대량으로 제작된다. 대량 생산체제에서 다양성을 유지하는 것은 비효율적이기 때문에 체계화된 제작 시스템이 필요했을 것이며, 이는 곧 최적화 혹은 단일화로의 방향을 지향했던 것으로 추정하였다.
한편, 연화문수막새의 문양은 다양한 형식으로 전개되는 양상이 관찰된다. 한성기에 처음 등장한 연화문수막새는 웅진기에 남조의 영향을 받은 새로운 형태의 연화문수막새로 정립되어 유행한다. 이후 사비기에는 공인 또는 건물의 개성을 표현하기 위하여 연화문이 다양한 형식으로 다변화되는 양상이 관찰된다. 즉 웅진기로의 전환을 연화문수막새로의 일원화로, 사비기로의 전환을 연화문수막새의 다변화로 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, the factors of change were reviewed to understand the beginning of change in a roof-end tile with lotus design, and the standardized form of a roof-end tile with lotus design as a result was examined by comparing it with that of the Southern Dynasty of China.
First, in order to identify the factors of change, it is compared and reviewed that what are the similarities and differences of the roof-end tile with lotus design that was popular during the Hanseong and the Woongjin period. As a factor of change, it is estimated that the technology for making roof tiles in the Southern Dynasty of China had the greatest influence. This factor of change is observed not only in the pattern but also in the production technique. In other words, it is possibly assumed that the change and the standardization of a roof-end tile with lotus design has been accomplished through the selection and acceptance of new elements.
In addition, regarding the development process of a roof-end tile with lotus design that follows, the standardized production method is examined in terms of unification, and a roof-end tile with lotus design which has been differentiated into various forms is studied from the perspective of diversification. It is presumed that various manufacturing techniques coexisted through the process of the introduction of new technologies during the Hanseong period. Since then, many buildings have been built during the Woongjin and the Sabi period and roof tiles have been also produced in large quantities. Because it is inefficient to maintain diversity in the mass production system, a systematic production system would have been necessary, and it is estimated that it has been oriented toward optimization or unification.
On the other hand, it is observed that the patterns of a roof-end tile with lotus design was developed in various forms. The roof-end tile with lotus design, which first appeared in the Hanseong period, became popular and established as the new type of a roof-end tile with lotus design influenced by the Southern Dynasty of China during the Ungjin period. Afterwards, during the Sabi period, it is observed that a roof-end tile with lotus design is diversified into various forms in order to express the individuality of public figures or buildings. In other words, the transformation in a roof-end tile with lotus during the Woongjin period can be understood as the unification of a roof-end tile with lotus design, and transformation in a roof-end tile with lotus during the Sabi period can be understood as the diversification of a roof-end tile with lotus design.
