초록

중국의 불교경전 서사문화는 동시기 유행서풍과는 다른 개별의 서체 특징을 가지고 하나의 유형을 이루고 있다. 사경의 서체는 초기 東漢 말기부터 남북조시기까지 예서의 필의가 강한 ‘예해(隸楷)’, 그리고 이후 수·당시기에는 해서법이 정형화된 ‘정해(正楷)’로 크게 나누어진다. 즉 불경 서사문화는 동시기 유행서풍(시대서풍)과는 조금 다른 모습으로 변화·발전하게 되는데, 필획·결구 등이 전통적인 학습에 의해 전승되었기 때문이며, 이는 당시 유행서풍의 수용보다는 관습적인 성격이 더 강했던 것으로 보인다.
통일신라의 문자문화 역시 통일기 이후 수·당 서풍이 지배적이지만, 불교 서사문화는 동시기 유행서풍의 영향을 살펴보기 어렵다. 더구나 현전하는 통일신라 사경 및 불교 문자자료를 살펴보면 정형화된 수·당 사경의 조형성을 가지고 있는 것도 있지만, 그 이전 남북조 사경의 조형을 보이는 것도 있어 필획․결구의 특징 등에서 관습적인 성격을 짐작케 한다.
구체적으로 살펴보면, 초기 사경 서사는 경전의 보급·전파를 목적으로 하여 많은 양의 글자를 써야 했기 때문에 일정한 속도감이 필요하다. 筆寫시 속도감의 필요에 의해 用筆에서 起筆部는 尖筆의 형태로 생략되고, 收筆部 또한 回鋒이 생략된 채 붓을 멈추어 간단히 마무리를 한다. 획과 획의 연결성이 두드러지고, 획이 간략화되면서 행·초서의 자형을 수용하고 나아가 이체자의 형태까지 나아가게 된다.
이처럼 불교경전 서사문화에서 외적인 형태는 다양하게 변화·발전하게 되지만, 근본이 되는 경문의 서사는 초기 사경의 필법과 결구, 장법 등의 관습이 지속적으로 계승되어 내려온 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

Chinese Buddhist manuscript culture seems to maintain distinct stylistic features, which does not parallel to mainstream calligraphic movement. Calligraphic style of Buddhist manuscript in China was dominated by clerical script(隸書) from the end of East Han Dynasty to Southern and Northern dynasty period. However, the usage of regular script(楷書) becomes widespread in Sui and Tang dynasty. In other word, Buddhist manuscript culture was developed in its idiosyncratic atmosphere in which the ways for connecting strokes as well as stretching strokes was developed through repetitive practices.
Unified Silla dynasty appears to accept Sui and Tang dynasty’s calligraphic style, but it is hard to say that Unified Silla dynasty Buddhist manuscript calligraphy also follows to the mainstream movement. Some Unified Silla dynasty’s Buddhist manuscripts and documents accommodated dual traditions: Sui and Tang dynasty manuscript elements and previous dynasty’s ones.
In the early stage of Buddhism evangelization in China, it was required to produce many manuscripts to spread Buddhist doctrines. To deal with such demands, Buddhist scribes had to maintain a certain degree of maturity, by which they could write down text as fast as possible. In order to optimize brush strokes for every character, Buddhist scribes made initial strokes finer lines and tried not to extend the last strokes to the embellishment level, by which a Buddhist scribe had to pay the extra attention to render round shape of last strokes. Therefore, when we compare Buddhist manuscript’s calligraphic style with ordinary literati’s calligraphic style in those days, the former displays distinct features. A link among strokes becomes more definite, and the number of strokes in characters tends to be simplified and minimized. As a result, the overall appearance of Buddhist manuscript characters tended to embrace semi-cursive and cursive style of writing and then was developed to the stage, in which Buddhist scribes rendered variant characters. These characters are only shown in Buddhist manuscripts.
We have noticed the various means were devised in Buddhist manuscript culture. However, the fundamental elements, characters to complete the contents of various texts, do not follow the development of such means but succeed the initial period’s calligraphic style.
