조선 후기 공예품에 보이는 螭龍文 고찰 (A Study on the Hornless Dragon Pattern in late Joseon Dynasty Artifacts)

초록

조선 후기 공예품에는 이전 시기에 찾아보기 힘들었던 새로운 형태의 동물 문양이 장식되어 눈길을 끈다. 이 동물의 외형은 얇은 몸체와 두 갈래로 나뉜 긴 꼬리, 네 개의 다리를 지닌 형태로, 특히 19세기 조선 백자에 집중적으로 나타난다. 이 동물 문양의 연원을 살펴보면, 중국 고대 전설 속에 등장하는 뿔이 없는 용의 일종이자 바다에 근거지를 둔 神獸로서, 중국 문헌기록에 근거하여 현재 보편적으로 ‘螭龍’이라 불리고 있다.
이룡문은 일찍부터 중국 고대인들에게 용과 밀접한 관계가 있고 상서롭고 신비스러운 존재로 인식되어 왔다. 그러나 시간이 갈수록 점차 그 상징의미가 줄어들면서 淸代 이후까지 오랫동안 여러 공예품과 복식, 건축 등에 폭넓게 장식되었다. 청대에 성행한 이룡문은 청과 조선과의 교류가 활기를 띠는 18세기 이후, 조선에 물밀 듯이 수입된 청 문물과 함께 유입되었을 것으로 추정된다.
이룡문이 장식된 조선시대 유물은 18~19세기에 왕실과 문인사대부를 중심으로 사용된 목공예품과 백자 등이 남아있다. 왕실 대상 공예품은 印章, 龍交椅, 삽병틀, 가마 등이 있으며, 문인사대부 대상 공예품은 백자 文房用具와 향꽂이와 찻주전자 등이 있다. 이룡문의 장식구성은 크게 두 마리가 한 쌍을 이루는 대칭형과 한 마리만 등장하는 단독형으로 구분되며, 공예품의 종류와 사용대상에 따라 차이를 보인다. 대칭형은 주로 왕실용 공예품에서 정해진 양식에 의해 비교적 엄격함을 유지하였고, 단독형은 문인사대부용 백자에서 훨씬 자유롭고 다양한 유형으로 장식되었다.
이룡문은 특히 물과 관련된 백자 문방용구에 즐겨 채택되었는데, 그 배경은 당시 조선에서 유행하였던 古董書畵 취미와 문방용구 제작의 증가를 들 수 있다. 이룡문의 주변에는 구름과 파도문 등이 거의 빠짐없이 나타나 昇天하려는 장면이 묘사되었고, 詩句나 매죽문 등이 함께 장식되어 문인의 出仕와 隱逸의 상징의미가 반영되었다. 이러한 장식구성은 동시기 중국에서는 볼 수 없는 조선만의 독창적이고 특징적인 표현이다.

Among late Joseon Dynasty Artifacts, there was a new form of animal pattern that was hard to find previously. The animal has a thin body, long tail split into two branches, and four legs. It especially appears to be made of the white porcelain in 19th century of the Joseon dynasty. Looking through the origin of the pattern, this pattern is not only a kind of the hornless dragon in Ancient Chinese legends but also of an auspicious animal of the ocean. According to the records, it is generally called ‘the hornless dragon(螭龍)’.
The hornless dragon pattern has a close relationship with dragon of the ancient Chinese and was regarded as being of auspicious existence. However, as time went by, this perception lessened gradually. It commonly adorned artifacts, attire, and buildings during the Qing Dynasty. When the Joseon dynasty had a frequent interchanges with Qing dynasty in 18th century, it was suggested that it arrived with the imported goods from China.
Relics decorated with the hornless dragon pattern are woodcrafts and white porcelain and so on, which were used by the loyal family and literary noblemen as the central them during 18-19th century. Artifacts for the royal family were the seals, armchairs withwith dragon patterns, frames for folding paintings, and palanquins. Whereas common artifacts for the literary noblemen were white porcelain stationary, incense holders, teapots. The hornless dragon pattern can be categorized into two forms; a single dragon and a symmetrical pair of dragons. The symmetrical pattern was strictly controlled and used primarily in royal artifacts, while the single pattern was freely decorated on white porcelain for literary noblemen in various type.
At that time, in the Joseon dynasty, there was a trend of ‘Collecting Classical Works(Godongseohwa;古董書畵)' and stationary-making. As part of this trend, it was adopted to the white porcelain stationary especially related with water. At this time, putting the clouds and water waves design around the hornless dragon with few exceptions, the hornless dragon was expressed like a ascending dragon. Or by expressing the verse and the plum and bamboo design, it was expressed the symbolic meaning of entering government service and retirement of the literary noblemen. The composition of the decorations is original and is distinguished from the Chinse ones of the same age.
