전근대 한국 문학 속의 자연재해 ―18세기와 19세기의 자연재해를 중심으로― (Natural Disasters in Pre-Modern Korean Literature)

초록

이 논문은 18･19세기에 발생한 자연재해를 중심으로 전근대 한국 문학에 나타난 자연재해의 양상을 조사하고 분석하였다. 전근대 시기에는 정부측 기록이나 역사서에 자연재해 기록이 상세하게 실려 있고, 그 사료를 활용한 연구가 진행되었다. 반면에 문집과 필기, 일기를 비롯한 문학 작품에도 작품이 풍부하게 실려 있으나 관심의 대상이 되지 않았다. 먼저 이상기후와 대기근, 대홍수, 폭풍피해 등 당시에 빈발한 자연재해를 묘사한 작품의 개황을 소개하고 역사기록을 보완하는 작품의 풍부함과 가치를 확인하였다.
본론에서는 18세기의 사례로 향촌사회에 거주하는 士族의 작품을 분석하였다. 壬子年(1732)과 癸丑年(1733)에 전라도 장흥 지역의 대기근을 묘사한 장편 한글가사 「壬癸歎」을 대상으로 향촌사회 지식인의 자연재해를 보는 시각과 정서를 살폈고, 그에 대비하여 壬寅年(1782) 대기근에 安山 지역 양반인 柳慶種이 지은 수십 편의 한시를 분석하여 부유한 문인의 재해 묘사에 나타난 특징을 살펴보았다. 19세기의 사례로는 서울에 거주하며 관직생활을 하는 관료의 작품을 분석하였다. 우선 辛巳年(1821)에 大洪水와 뒤이은 콜레라 전염병이 발생했을 때 成海應 등이 지은 작품을 분석하여 재해의 엄청난 실상과 그에 따른 공포와 우려를 살펴보았고, 壬辰年(1832) 대홍수에 徐淇修가 쓴 작품을 분석하여 재해를 고발하는 방식을 살펴보았다.
다양한 시각의 작품을 통해 피해자나 목도한 자의 시선에서 자연재해를 상세하게 기록하고 증언하며, 공포와 분노 등 정서적 반응을 적극적으로 표현하고 재해의 실상을 고발하는 특징을 찾아냈다. 문학 작품이 정부측 기록이나 역사사료와 다르게 지닌 큰 특징을 새롭게 부각시켰다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the various portrayals of natural disasters in pre-modern Korean literary works. The focus is on the 18th- and 19th-century disasters. In pre-modern Korea, natural disasters were recorded in detail in official court and other historical records. In-depth studies of these writings have been carried out by scholars in relevant fields. However, there is also an abundance of references to natural disasters in literary works; they have not received much attention. This paper examines literary works that are specifically about the frequently- occurring natural disasters, such as severe weather, great famine, great flood, and storms. The paper argues that the literary works are rich in information that complement archival writings about the natural disasters.
For works dealing with 18th-century disasters, the paper examines writings by local scholars living in rural communities. In particular, it examines “Imgyetan” (壬癸歎, “Black Rat Black Ox Lamentation,” author unknown), a long poem written in Hangeul. The poem laments miseries caused by a severe famine that ravaged the Jangheung area, Jeolla Province in 1732 (the Year of Black Rat) and 1733 (the Year of Black Ox). The paper argues that this work shows a local intellectual’s perspective and sensitivity to the pains brought on by a great natural disaster. The paper also examines dozens of hansi --poems in Classical Chinese-- written about the great famine of 1782 by YU Gyeong-jong (1714~1784), an Ansan-area yangban. Here the perspective of a wealthy man of letters is examined. For the 19th-century disasters, this paper examines mostly works by government officials who lived in Seoul. SEONG Hae-eung describes the outbreak of cholera following the great flood of 1821; he focuses on the enormous scale of damages and the prevalence of fear and worries. SEO Gi-su describes the great flood of 1832; the focus of his writing is on exposing the corruption and incompetence of public offices.
The various writers take on different perspectives, some that of a victim, others that of a sympathetic yet neutral witness. These literary writings are detailed records of and witnesses to the natural disasters of the times, and yet they also contain active emotional responses, such as fear and anger. Some of them also have the characteristics of an exposé on the man-made nature of the disasters. Thus this paper highlights an aspect of the literary works dealing with natural disasters that distinguishes them from official and archival records.
