발해 연화문 와당의 고구려 계승성 검토 (A Study on the Connection between the Roof-end Tiles with Lotus Design of Balhae and Koguryo)

초록

본 논문에서는 발해 연화문 와당을 대상으로 연화의 형태, 간식문, 부가문양대, 자방, 주연부 그리고 복합문 등의 개별 문양소들을 분석하고, 이를 고구려 와당과 비교하여 그 계통과 고구려 계승성에 대하여 살펴보았다.
고구려 연화문 와당은 5세기 중엽에서 7세기 중엽에 이르기까지 평양지역을 중심으로 4+4형의 양각형 연화와 선각형 연화를 교대로 배치시킨 연화+연화문 와당이 유행하고 있었는데, 연화+연화문 와당의 선각형 연봉오리 연화와 측면연화가 발해 연화문 와당의 중심문양으로 등장하고 있었으며, 발해 연화문 와당의 간식문, 주연부, 자방 등도 연화+연화문 와당의 문양 배치와 기본 구도를 그대로 유지하고 있었다. 또한 평양지역에서 출토되는 구획선이 없는 연화문 와당의 부가문양대도 발해 와당의 중요한 문양대로 등장하고 있었다.
이러한 사실은 발해 연화문 와당이 고구려 연화+연화문 와당의 선각형 연봉오리 연화, 측면연화와 더불어 사잇문, 주연부, 자방부 그리고 구획선이 없는 연화문 와당의 연주문 형태의 부가문양대라는 형태요소를 각기 수용하여 이것을 발해적인 이미지로 재구성함으로써 새로운 형태의 독창적인 와당으로 발전시키고 있었다는 것을 보여주고 있다.
따라서 발해 연화문 와당이 5세기 중엽에 출현하여 7세기 중엽에 이르기까지 평양지역에서만 유행하고 있었던 고구려 연화+연화문 와당의 계통을 계승하고 있었다는 것은 발해의 문화적 요소가 부분적으로 평양지역의 계통을 흡수하고 있었던 것은 아니었을까 생각된다.

영어초록

As the individual elements of design are creative in comparison with neighboring regions, the origin or lineage of the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae is very obscure. In this thesis I reviewed on the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae through analyzing the individual elements of design like the shape of lotus flower,interval design, supplement designs, ovary and composite designs. Then I examined that how the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae succeeded the characteristics of Koguryo roof-end tiles.
The roof-end tiles of Koguryo are very creative. When the roof-end tiles of Koguryo transformed from roof-end tiles with clouds design to lotus design, they took lotus bud design as a alternative to lotus petal design which was common in East Asia. As the roof-end tiles with lotus bud design express lotus flower independently, they would influence not only lotus flower but also the other design elements.
In the divergence process of the roof-end tiles with lotus design, these characteristics of modes were inherited. As a result, the roof-end tiles with the combination of lotus and other designs which alternatively arranged two design elements of lotus + lotus design showed up. For the roof-end tiles with lotus + lotus design set the same design elements on a side of roof-end tiles, we don’t have to distinguish between central design and composite design.
While the lotus design in central design maintains the mode of carved-in-relief lotus bud traditionally, the lotus design in composite design takes the mode of carved-in-line lotus bud or side faced lotus flower to reveal the nature of the roof-end tiles with composite design. And yet the mode of carved-in-line lotus bud and side faced lotus flower which is the characteristics of the roof-end tiles with lotus + lotus design continues to the roof-end tiles of Balhae.
In my opinion the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae also expresses lotus buds as a alternative to lotus petals. In addition to the lotus buds, interval designs, ovary which are the characteristics of the roof-end tiles with lotus + lotus design continue to the roof- end tiles of Balhae. Besides, supplement designs like lotus pearl design which has non dividing line and excavated in Pyungyang area also succeeded in the roof-end tiles of Balhae.
So the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae succeeded the modes of lotus + lotus design of Koguryo roof-end tiles and created new modes of roof-end tiles on it. From the fact that the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae succeeded the modes lotus + lotus design of Koguryo roof-end tiles, I conclude that the roof-end tiles with lotus design of Balhae succeeded the modes of Pyungyang area.
