발해 연화문와당의 편년과 지역성 (The Chronology and Regionality of Balhae Roof-end Tiles with Lotus Design)

초록

발해 연화문와당에 대한 연구는 과거 일본이나 중국, 러시아, 북한 학자들에 의해 이루어졌는데, 형식분류에 있어 그 기준에 대한 심도 있는 고찰이 이루어지지 않은 채 문양을 나열하는 연구가 대부분이었다. 본고에서는 이러한 문제점을 인식하고 양식적인 속성과 계측적인 속성들을 바탕으로 형식을 분류한 후, 그 결과를 바탕으로 편년안을 수립하고 그 지역적인 특징들을 살펴보았다. 발해 심엽형 연화문와당은 자방부의 구성에 따라 일련의 형식학적 발전양상이 확인되고 있어 9개의 유형과 25개의 형식으로 구분이 가능하다.
발해 전기는 국가형성과 관련된 시기이며 단판 연화문와당이 등장하고 도성지역을 중심으로는 심엽형연화문와당이 확인된다. 발해 중기 도성지역에서는 심엽형 연화문와당의 비율이 크게 증가하고, 간식문의 형태가 다양해지기 시작한다. 발해 후기에는 상경으로의 본격적인 환도가 이루어지고 단판 연화문과 복판 연화문와당이 더 이상 등장하지 않는다. 솔빈부지역에서는 재지적인 간식문들과 결합한 형식들이 확인된다.
발해 연화문와당의 지역적 특징들을 살펴보면 각 지역마다 특징적인 점들이 확인되고 있는 것이 파악된다. 상경지역에서는 삭월형, 삼봉형 등 독특한 간식문 형태가 확인되며 자방부 구성은 돌기+권선에부가문양이 추가된 것들이 나타나는 것이 특징이다. 중경지역에서는 심엽형 연화문와당이 주류를 이루고, 남경지역 청해토성에서는 십자형의 간식문 형태가 등장하고 있는 것으로 보아 발해가 중기 이후 영역을 확장하는 과정에서 나타난 것으로 파악된다. 동경지역에서는 중앙으로 영역화되기 이전부터 재지적인 요소들과 결합하여 지역적인 색채를 띠고 있는 요소들이 확인된다. 솔빈부지역에서는 발해가 다른 지역과는 다른 독자적인 형태의 문양들이 사원유적들을 중심으로 나타난다.
발해 연화문와당은 각각의 속성들과 형식들이 시공간적인 의미를 지니고 있는 것으로 파악되었고, 더나아가서는 발해의 대외적인 영역확장과도 관련지어 볼 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

Studies on the roof-end tiles with lotus patterns of Balhae have mostly been carried out by scholars of Japan, China, Russia, and North Korea. Most of their efforts have focused on merely listing the artifacts, without giving in-depth consideration to the criteria for their form classification. In recognition of this problem, this paper classifies the Balhae roof-end tiles with lotus patterns according to their pattern and measurement-related attributes, establishes a plan for their classification, and checks their regional features. The roof-end tiles with apical leaf type display a series of formative developments depending on the composition of the lotus ovary. Those that have been found so far are divided into 9 types and 25 forms.
Those made during the early Balhae Period are single petal type roofend tiles, and apical leaf type roof-end tiles were used in the capital and its environs. In the mid-Balhae Period, the percentage of apical leaf type roofend tiles increased noticeably, particularly in the capital and its environs; the pattern of interval design was diversified. During the late Balhae Period, when the kingdom relocated the capital to the Sanggyeong area, single petal type and composite petal type roof-end tiles disappeared. Forms combined with the local interval design have been found in the areas that were formally of the Solbinbu area.
Balhae roof-end tiles with lotus patterns show local characteristics. Those found in the Sanggyeong area show unique patterns, consisting of crest moon patterns or three mountain peaks patterns, with the ovary composed of a bump and coil with other patterns. Those found in the Junggyeong area are mostly of the apical leaf type. Those found in Cheonghaetoseong Earthen Fortification in the Namgyeong area show a cross pattern interval design. It is presumed that these differences are associated with the kingdom’s territorial expansion process.
발해 연화문와당의 편년과 지역성 | 153 Those found in the Donggyeong area display factors combined with local characteristics, even in the period before it became the capital. Those found in the Solbinbu area, particularly those at temple sites, display unique patterns different from those found in other areas.
The attributes and forms of Balhae roof-end tiles with lotus patterns are thought to display spatio-temporal significance, and are believed to be associated with the kingdom’s territorial expansion.
