초록

This paper’s aims are as follows: (i) to examine the properties of the Koreangeneric passive sentence with the potential meaning, (ii) to classify two types,the instrumental generic passive sentence and the theme generic passivesentence, and (iii) to explain the generic meaning interpretation of these twotypes of the generic passive sentence by the Generative Lexicon Theory.
Above all, we can classify the two types of the Korean generic passivesentence according to the thematic role of the subject, instrumental or theme.
Considering the syntactic and semantic properties, the instrumental genericpassive sentence has more generic meaning than the theme one. In the case ofthe theme generic passive has the ambiguity, the generic meaning and specificpassive meaning. Based on the fact that the generic interpretation of the nounresult from the telic role of its lexical-semantic structure, we suggest that thegeneric meaning of the instrumental generic passive sentence is derived fromthe relationship between the telic role of the noun’s semantic structure and theagentive role of the passive verb’s semantic structure, but that the genericmeaning of the theme passive sentence is derived from the formal role of thepassive verb’s semantic structure. Also the subject of the instrumental genericone is not the argument of the passive verb, while the subject of the themegeneric oner is the argument. This is the reason that the theme generic onehas ambiguity. To conclusion, the difference of two type generic passivesentences is decided on which role of the qualia structure contributes to thesemantic interpretation in the lexical-semantic structure.
