In order to effectively deliver the warning information to consumers, we should pay attention to the organization and the representation of the information. In this paper, we deal with the content and the representation of the warnings from a linguistic viewpoint. As for the content, the warning statement contains risk information and a method for avoiding the risk. The risk information is expressed by a speech act 'warning' in the form of a declarative sentence and the method of avoidance by a speech act 'advising' in the form of a few sentence types. In particular, the 'advising' appears along with the 'warning' to enhance the effect of the warning. And the combination of the two information results in various types of warning statements. As for the representation of warnings, we notice particularly ellipsis under the principle that the warning should be clearly understood and explicitly expressed. That is attributed to the construction of the warning text. In general, the product name is presented as a heading in the warning text. If the warning statement mentions the product name, the cohesion of the text is reduced. Therefore, the product name is frequently elided, and the pro-forms are sometimes used. And if the product name should be presented, it is realized as a topic by the topic marker "-un/nun”. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)
