일본근대문학의 자연·계절의 발견과 그 전개 (New Discovery of Nature and Seasons, and Its Development in Modern Japanese Literature)

초록

日本文学における自然·季節の描写の伝統は、近代文学においても受け継がれながら、新しく展開していくことになる。自然を新たに內面で発見した国木田独歩(1871~1908)は詩的な散文である『武蔵野』(1898)の中で全感覺を利用し、自然と季節を近代的に描写した。このような独歩の表現は二葉亭四迷(1864~1909)が1888年に翻訳した、ロシア作家ツルゲーネフ(1818~1883)の「あひびき」(1850)と、イギリスの詩人ワーズワース(1770~1850)の浪漫詩等の西洋文学の影響を受けた。そして、徳富盧花(1868~1927)の場合は自然の情趣を浪漫的な文体で描写した散文集『自然と人生』(1900)で、主に視覺的に自然·季節を表現したところに特徵がある。蘆花はジョン·ラスキンの『近代画家』論を參考にして、時により移り変わる雲に対し、細密に描写することにも成功した。また、島崎藤村(1872-1943)は写生文集『千曲川のスケッチ』(1912)で、ラスキンの絵画論に刺戟され、様々な雲の色と模樣の変化を克明に觀察して描いている。また、夏の夜、蛙が一斉に鳴き立てるのを聞き、繁殖と生物の世界の不思議を聯想するのは、自然に対する科学的な探究精神の表れである。このような近代的な思考は、近世の俳人松尾芭蕉風の<侘び>のイメージ描写とは全然異質的な表現である。近代日本文学において自然·風景の発見は內面の自覺を促し、文学の近代化に寄与した。日本文学における自然·季節の近代的な表現は独歩から始まり、蘆花と藤村へと季節描写が展開して、四季の描写は川端康成(1899~1972)の文学において、より意識的で本格的に極大化されたという事実を確認した。日本文学における自然の描写は四季の移り変わりを必須的な要件としているから、日本人の自然觀は季節感の表現を持って具体化されたと思う。日本人は四季の小さな変化に細かく反應して描写し、小さく不完全なものとはかない四季の循環に順應し、融合する自然觀を表していると言える。

영어초록

The tradition of descriptions of seasons continues, but it unfolds into the new dimension in Modern Japanese Literature. Kunikida Doppo(国木田独歩;1871-1908), who newly discovers nature with an inner eye, describes the nature and seasons using all senses in his poetic prose Musasino(武蔵野). The way in which Doppo expresses is influenced by the Western literature such as W. Wordsworth's Romantic poetry and Ivan S. Turgenev's "あひびき"(1850) that is translated by Futaba Teisimei(二葉 亭四迷;1864-1909) in 1888.
Tokutomi Roka(徳富盧花) wrote the essay Nature and Life(1900), which is characteristic of his visual description of seasons in nature. Influenced by John Ruskin's Modern Painters, Roka succeeds in capturing the momentary movement of clouds in details.
Stimulated by Ruskin's paintings, Simazaki Toson(島崎藤村;1872-1943) scientifically observes and vividly describes various colors and changing shapes of clouds in his realistic writing "千曲川のスケッチ"(1912). Moreover, under the influence of Darwinism and scientific exploratory spirit, for example, people come to connect frogs' croaking in chorus in summer night to breeding and the world of creatures.
This is very different from the way in which Matsuo Basyo(松尾芭蕉) describes in that images provokes the sentiments of silence and solitude.
Japanese Literature deals with the new discovery of scenery in nature, which is stimulated by inner consciousness and this contributes to modernizing Japanese Literature. Doppo starts using the modern expressions to describe a season in nature and T. Roka and S. Toson develop them. We can also find the descriptions of four seasons more consciously done as well as maximized in the literature of Kawabata Yasunari(川端康成;1899-1972).
When it comes to describing the nature in Japanese Literature, the changes of four seasons are the most essential components, and therefore, the Japanese's view of nature is specified by expressing the sentiments evoked from seasons in nature.
In other words, the Japanese responds to the subtle changes in seasons and describe them to show their view of nature, which focuses on integrating the trivial, imperfect and ephemeral into the circle of four seasons.
