무신정권기 문인들의 문학에 나타난 출사와 은둔 지향의 양면적 심리 고찰 -은둔 지향 작품 창작이 지닌 치유적 기능에 주목하여- (Literati's Double-Sided Psychology of Government Service and a Secluded Life Style Shown in Their Literary Works in the Military Regime : Focusing on the Healing Function of Secluded-life-oriented Wor)

초록

고려시대 무신정권기 문인들은 관직에 나가고자 하는 소망을 이루기 위해 무신정권을 찬양하고 자신들의 능력을 과시하는 성향을 보이면서도, 출사가 어려울 때는 은둔을 표방하며 정치 현실을 비판하거나 민생 구제를 하지 못하는 현재의 처지를 자위했다. 이러한 그들의 상반된 심리는 그들의 한문학과 경기체가 작품들을 분석할 때 잘 드러난다. 이 논문에서는 출사 행로를 기준으로 이 시기 문인들을 유형별로 나눈 후, 문인들이 출사와 은둔 지향의 양면적 성향을 나타낸 작품들을 분석해 그 의미를 고찰했다.
무신정권기를 대표하는 문인들 가운데 이규보와 이인로는 과거에 급제하고 관료로서의 길을 걸었기에 출사 지향적 가치관을 <한림별곡> 및 일부 한시에서 보여주면서도, 출사 전에 겪어야 했던 기다림과 무력감 등의 부정적 감정을 견디어내고자 은둔 지향의 가치관을 명분으로 삼는 모습을 다른 한시 작품을 통해 드러냈다. 그런데 이규보는 최씨 정권에서 성공한 문인의 대표 주자인 반면, 이인로는 출사는 했으나 낮은 관직에 머물며 오랜 세월 승진하지 못한 차이로 인하여 세부 양상에서는 차이를 보인다. 임춘의 경우는 과거 급제조차 하지 못하고 불우한 일생을 살다가 요절했기에 그 심리적 갈등이 두 문인에 비해 더욱 컸으며, 자존감의 하락 속에 출사와 은둔 사이를 방황할 수밖에 없었다.
진화와 김극기의 경우는 관직 출사의 행로에서는 차이를 보인다 해도 작품을 통해 은둔 지향의 속성을 드러내며 이를 관직출사와 관련해 활용하는 모습을 보인다는 면에서 비슷하며, 이는 이인로와 죽림고회 일원들이 은둔지향을 통해 관직자로서는 미진한 현실을 달랬던 것과 같은 흐름의 노선이라 생각할 수 있다.
유형별로 출사 양상은 좀 다르지만 결국 그들이 창작한 은둔 지향의 작품들은 관직 출사를 통해 정치적 꿈을 실현하고자 하는 희망이 무신정권기라는 특수한 상황으로 인해 좌절될 경우에 출사와 은둔 지향이라는 양면적 심리의 거리를 줄이면서, 내면적으로는 현재 처지를 위로하고 밖으로는 자존심을 잃지 않도록 하는 명분을 갖게 했다는 점에서 정치적 혼란기에 상처 받고 위축될 수 있는 문인들에게 중요한 치유적 역할을 수행했다고 판단된다.

영어초록

The literati in the Goryeo military regime showed a tendency to praise the military regime and show off their abilities to fulfill their wish of going into government service. However, when faced with the difficulty of the taking up the actual service, they laid claim to a secluded life, criticized the political reality, or apologized for their inability to serve the people, and then consoled themselves. An analysis of their Chinese classical works and Gyeonggichega (a type of poetry) shows such a psychological contradiction. This paper divides the literati based on their paths toward public service, and analyzes the issues in their works including such psychological contradictions.
Among the representative literati in the military regime, in some of their literary pieces, such as <Hallimbyeolgok> and some classic Chinese poems, Yi Gyu-bo and Yi In-no passed the Gwageo (state examination to attain the highest level of position in the government), took the official road, and illustrated the value of entering into public service. On the other hand, in their other classical Chinese pieces, they expressed secluded-life-oriented values and helplessness, among other negative feelings, as they had to wait for a long time to go into public service. While Yi Gyu-bo became a major successful literary man during Choi's regime, Yi In-no entered into public service in a low office and was long unable to get a promotion. This resulted in a contrasting psychology between the two authors. As another example, Im Chun failed the Gwageo examination, lived an unfortunate life, and died at a young age, thereby psychologically suffering far beyond what was endured by the two aforementioned literati. A mid losing his self-esteem, Im Chun was torn between going into public service and living a secluded life.
Jin Hwa and Kim Geuk-gi embraced a secluded life value through their works, consoling themselves for not entering public service. This is similar to how Yi In-no and the members of Juknimgohoe Society sought the value of a secluded life, and yet consoled themselves through a public lives.
The literati's secluded-life-oriented works, though different in terms of their public lives, helped lift up their frustrated minds while leading political lives under the military regime, and healed their double-sided psychology of going into the public lives while living a secluded life. The literati's secluded-life-oriented works, eventually helped encourage the literati. Their works are considered useful in healing the hurt and withdrawn literati during political turmoil.
