    초록

Located on the East Coast of Gyeongsang Province, Wolseongjeong has been cherished as a poetic theme from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty. The reason for this was the lush and beautiful pine forest surrounding this pavilion. The various names of Chinese character used for ‘Wolseongjeong’ all emphasize the significance of this special pine forest's origins and historical importance. While the pine forest of Wolseongjeong was admired primarily for its scenic beauty, it was also acknowledged for the excellent timber value possessed by the well-grown pine trees.
From the Imjin War until the 18th century, the landscape of this forest was well maintained, satisfying the viewer's perspective, and the Wolseongjeong pine trees showcased a culture of landscape transplantation through spatial migration. However, post the 18th century, the utilization of pine wood gradually increased, and by the late 19th century, the pine trees of Wolseongjeong were extensively exploited for their timber value, eventually leading to the disappearance of the pine forest's scenic elements and its deterioration to a state where there was ‘nothing to see.’ During the Joseon Dynasty, lots of Wolseongjeongdo that painting Wolseongjeon were created as landscape paintings showcasing the characteristics of pine forest scenery, even after the complete disappearance of the Wolseongjeong forest in the late 19th century. Not only were similar landscapes depicted but even more were produced. This study interprets that Wolseongjeongdo depicting the vanished pine forest reflect the visual demand of people who still wished to enjoy the value of the landscape, displaying the memory and intrinsic value of that scenery. However, considering both human visual perception and practical aspects of life, it might be challenging to judge the value of landscapes against that of timber alone. The Wolseongjeong pine trees became materials for constructions while also being remembered as landscapes in paintings. Perhaps, if the painting of that landscape adorned the interior of a structure, both material and visual values could have been satisfied simultaneously. This study aims to display the conflict between landscapes and timber, unfolding a history that highlights the clash of human demands regarding the environment.
