<<육군의무장교단잡지>>를 통해 살펴본 1950년대 의학 연구: 감염병 연구를 중심으로 (Medical Research in the 1950s in the Medical Journal of the ROK Army: Focusing on Research on Infectious Diseases)

초록

이 논문은 <<육군의무장교단잡지>>에 발표된 논문을 분석함으로써 1950년대 한국에서 수행된 감염병 연구의 특징을 이해하고자 한다. 1950년대 한국은 전쟁의영향으로 많은 것들이 결핍된 것으로 설명된다. 이 시기한국 의학은 국제사회의 원조를 받아 미국 의학을 학습함으로써 발전의 기틀을 마련한 것으로 그려졌다. 다른 한편으로는 전쟁을 기점으로 군에 의학 인력들이 집중되면서, 군을 중심으로 의학 연구 활동이 수행되었다. 이러한 모습은 1950년대 한국의 의학이 수동적으로만 존재했던 것은 아닌 것으로 이해된다. 당시 대표적인 군의학잡지인 <<육군의무장교단잡지>>는 연구자들이 다양한 주제의 연구 논문을 발표하는 학술 활동 공간이었다. 이 논문은 <<육군의무장교단잡지>>에 실린 감염병 논문을 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 다음과 같은 특징적인 모습을 발견하였다. 첫째로 연구자들이 급성 전염병보다는 결핵이나 기생충 관련 질병 등에 관심을 많이 가졌다는 점이다. 만성 감염병은 최신의 연구방법이 아니더라도 집단 검진이나 통계적 관찰 연구 등 상대적으로 손쉽게 접근할 수 있는 주제였다. 둘째로 이 학술지가 신진 의학 인력 양성의 공간이 되었다는 점이다. 전쟁을 기점으로 군에 동원된 의과대학 소속 연구자들은 이곳에 논문을 발표함으로써 학위를 취득했다. 이후 이들은 각 대학 또는 연구소에서 활동하며 학문적 발전에 크게 기여했다. 셋째로 시간이 지날수록 군의학 학술지로서의 정체성을 확립해갔다는 점이다. 창간 초기 발표된 논문들은 일반인을 대상으로 하는 감염병 연구가 많았던 반면, 후반에 이르면 군대라는 집단을 대상으로 하는 연구가 많아졌다. 대표적으로 육군본부 의무감실이 군을 관리하는데 필요한 감염병 관련 지식을 발표한 논문이나 군부대가 위치한 지역과 관련하여 모기 조사 연구가 발표된 것을 들 수 있다. 이렇게 볼 때 1950년대한국 의학은 미약하게나마 독자적인 연구를 수행했고, 이것은 이후 의학적, 보건의료적 발달에 영향을 주었다.

영어초록

This paper attempts to understand the characteristics of infectious disease research conducted in Korea in the 1950s by analyzing the papers published in the Medical Journal of the ROK Army. It is explained that Korea in the 1950s lacked many things due to the influence of the war. During this period, Korean medicine was depicted as laying the foundation for development by learning American medicine with the aid of the international community. Meanwhile, as medical personnel were concentrated in the military from the beginning of the war, medical research activities were conducted around the military. It can be said that Korean medicine in the 1950s did not exist only passively. At that time, the representative military medical journal, the Medical Journal of the ROK Army, provided space for academic activities where researchers published their studies on various topics. This paper finds the following characteristic features by focusing on the infectious disease theses published in the Medical Journal of the ROK Army. First, researchers were more interested in tuberculosis or parasite-related diseases than in acute infectious diseases. Even if the research on chronic infectious diseases did not use the latest research method, many papers had been published because it was relatively easy to access the topic through group examinations or statistical observation research. Second, the journal served as space for fostering emerging medical personnel. Researchers from medical schools mobilized for the military at the beginning of the war earned their degrees by publishing papers in the journal. Since then, they had contributed greatly to academic development by working at universities or research institutes. Third, as time passed, the identity as a military medical journal was established for the Medical Journal of the ROK Army. While there were many infectious disease studies targeting the general public at the early stages of the journal’s publication, more studies came to target the military group in the latter half of the 1950s. Representative examples include a paper in which the Army Headquarters Medical Office published knowledge on infectious diseases necessary to manage the military and a study on mosquitoes in relation to the areas where military units were located. Judging from the papers on infectious diseases published in the Medical Journal of the ROK Army, Korean medicine in the 1950s conducted independent research, albeit weak, which had an impact on the development of medical and health care afterwards.
