중국 세로 숏폼 드라마 <무쌍>의 성공요인 분석-그레마스 기호학의 관점으로- (Analysis of the success factors of the Chinese stand- up short drama “Wushuang”

초록

버티컬 비디오(Vertical Video)라고 명명된 세로 형식의 숏폼 드라마는 2018 년 아이치이에서 서비스되었으나 자본력과 인력 부족으로 큰 주목을 받지 못 했다. 그 후 2020년에 이르러 드라마 제작사와 OTT 플랫폼에서 본격적으로 숏폼 형식의 드라마를 잇달아 선보이기 시작하며 하나의 형식으로 정립되었 다. 가볍고 쉽게 소비할 수 있는 숏폼 드라마와 같은 형식의 콘텐츠가 큰 인기 를 끌고 있는 것은 시대적 흐름에 따른 자연스러운 현상이라고 말할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 그레마스 기호학의 행위자 모델과 기호사각형을 통해 중국 에서 큰 인기를 끌고 있는 세로 숏폼 드라마 <무쌍>(無雙)의 캐릭터의 기능과 의미에 대해 분석했다. 숏폼 드라마 <무쌍>은 현대 중국의 모습을 현실적으 로 반영한 드라마 스토리와 등장인물들이 사회적 이슈가 되며 공개된 지 일주 일 만에 충전액 1억 2000만 개를 돌파하였다. 2024년 1월까지 총 94부작으 로 업데이트되었으며 위챗 미니 프로그램으로도 출시되어 방송 일주일 만에 충전 수입 1억 위안을 초과하며 큰 인기를 증명하였다. 분석 대상은 <무쌍>의 6화 ‘심우녕과의 이혼(與沈宇寧離婚)’, 12화 ‘입찰 박람회(招標會)’이며 기호사 각형을 통해 요소들 사이에서 일어나는 관계를 살펴보았고, 드라마의 갈등 구 조인 인물의 대립과 힘의 충돌을 파악하기 위해 행위자 모델을 사용하였다.
연구 결과, 숏폼 드라마 <무쌍>은 흥미롭게 구성된 줄거리와 중국인이 공 감할 수 있는 뚜렷한 캐릭터를 갖고있으며, 개인과 사회의 관계, 감정 및 이성 적 선택에 대해 심도 있게 논의하는 드라마임을 확인할 수 있었다. 이런 이유 로 <무쌍>은 중국의 광범위한 관객층으로부터 큰 인기를 얻었으며, 강력한 사 회적 반향과 현대 중국에 대한 심층적 논의의 대상이 되었다고 생각한다.

The Vertical Video format made its debut on the iQiYi platform in 2018 but initially failed to garner widespread attention due to limited capital and human resources. By 2020, this format began to gain ground as television production companies and OTT platforms officially launched short video dramas. Today, Generation Z, the digital-native generation, prefers to consume concise and impactful contents on their mobile devices. The appeal of easily digestible content formats like short video dramas aligns with contemporary trends.
This paper delves into the roles and significance of characters in the highly popular Chinese vertical short video drama Wushuang by employing Greimas’s actant model and the semiotic square. Wushuang has emerged as a new archetype in modern Chinese television dramas, featuring realistic narratives and characters that resonate with audiences and spark social discourse. Within a week of its release, the series surpassed a staggering 120 million in recharge volume. By January 2024, the series had reached 94 episodes and was launched on the WeChat mini-program on August 25th, achieving over 100 million RMB in recharge revenue within a week of its broadcast, underscoring its immense popularity.
Focusing on episodes 6 “Divorce with Shen Yuning” and 12 “Auction” of Wushuang, this paper utilizes the semiotic square to dissect the relationships between various elements, and employs the actant model to understand the structural conflicts within the drama, particularly the opposition and power dynamics among characters. The semiotic square analysis reveals conflicts between personal values and societal expectations, as well as between emotional bonds and rational decision-making. It also highlights the contrasting symbols of disdain and reverence. These dichotomies reflect both the characters’ internal conflicts and the complex realities of society, including issues of power, familial pressures, and self-identity. The paper concludes that Wushuang is not only a piece of work that has tightly woven plots and well-defined characters, but has also transcended mere entertainment by delving into profound discussions of the interplay between the individual and society, and that between personal emotions and rational choices. These elements have contributed to the broad appeal of Wushuang among Chinese audiences and have sparked robust resonances from the society, positioning it as a significant commentary on modern China.
