‘무소속 신앙인’과 모임의 특성에 관한 연구: <세속성자 수요모임>을 중심으로 (A Study on the Characteristics of ‘Independent Believer’ and Meeting: Centering on the ‘Secular Saints’ Wednesday Gathering’)

이 연구는 ‘가나안 성도’들에 대한 연구가 명확한 용어상의 의미가 파악되지 않은 채 이루어짐으로 해서 여러 모순에 빠질 수 있다는 전제를 가지고 <세속성자 수요모임(이하 수요모임)>에 모이는 ‘무소속 신앙인’들에 대한 정의(正意)와 이들이 모이는 모임은 어떤 정체성을 가지고 있는가를 분석하였다. 이 모임은 구조적이지 않으며 지속적이지도 않다. 여기에 참석하는 ‘무소속 신앙인’들은 관리되지 않으며 일회적으로 참석한다. 이 모임은 일시적 모임으로 종교 의례(ritual)만 제공할 뿐, 이로 인해 리미널(liminal)한 반구조(anti-structure)의 특성을 가진다. 여기서 ‘무소속 신앙인’은 ‘주변인’으로 남는다. 이런 특성으로 인해 <수요모임>은 ‘임시 공동체(temporary community)’가 된다. 이 연구로 ‘무소속 신앙인(Independent Believers)’과 이들이 모이는 모임의 정체성에 대한 연구에 보다 분명한 기준을 제시할 수 있고 이런 특성을 가진 수요모임이 교회 밖 대안운동으로 지향하고 있는 내용을 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to analyze the definition of ‘independent believer’ and the identity of the gathering at the ‘Wednesdays meeting of the secular saints’(‘Wednesday gathering’ hereafter). It is based on the premise that the studies on ‘Canaan Saints’ which has become a big problem in the recent Korean Christianity can be trapped in various kinds of contradiction due to the fact that the meaning of the terms is not understood clearly. Also, this study examines its content with the view that such gathering might become an alternative as a new evangelical movement. To this end, this study points out the error of the term ‘Canaan Saints’ and explains the legitimacy of ‘Independent Believers.’ The religious movement that is happening today can be largely divided into two groups: one is a movement within the scope of existing religion and the other is the creation of a new religion. The ‘New Asceticism’ and ‘Wednesday Gathering’ in the United States share the common ground in that they are new religious movements within evangelicalism as well as in their contents. They criticize existing churches and societies through the connection between religion and culture and offer an alternative. Wednesday Gathering emphasizes the social participation of believers through rituals, and all orders reveal this. This gathering is neither structured nor continuous. The ‘Independent Believers’ attending the gathering are unmanaged and often attend one-off. This gathering only serves as a ritual for temporal gatherings and thus has a characteristic of liminal anti-structure. Here, ‘Independent Believers’ remain as ‘Marginal People.’ They also have a characteristic of ‘liquid church’ in that they emphasize the practice in reality while not being structural, and try to connect religion and society. Due to these characteristics, Wednesday Gathering becomes a ‘temporary community.’ This study can provide a clearer standard for the studies on the identity of ‘Independent Believers’ and their gathering, and deepens the understanding that the Wednesday Gathering with these characteristics seeks to become an alternative movement outside of church.
