초록

오웰의 사상은 무정부주의와 윤리적 사회주의, 집단주의적 사회주의를 결합시키면서 하나의 독특한 구성물을 형성했다. 그리고 여기에 보수적 요소까지 더해져 그의 사상은 보수주의, 무정부주의, 윤리적 사회주의, 집단주의적 사회주의(CAEC: conservatism, anarchism, ethical socialism, colectivist socialism)의 사각형 안의 한 지점을 차지하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 이 각각의 요소들은 하나씩 떼어놓고 보면 서로 배타적인 사상이 될 수도 있겠지만 오웰이 지닌 각각의 요소는 모두 오웰에 의해 약간씩 굴절되어 서로를 지지하고 있다. 그리고 이 각각의 요소들은 모두 개인주의와 집단주의의 조화를 찾으려는 노력에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 그렇지만 이 두 부분 중에 선행하는 요소는 언제나 개인주의였음을 확인할 수 있다. 개인의 삶이란 구체성이 사라진 위에서 나타나는 자유나 평등과 같은 구호는 오웰에게는 아무 의미가 없었다. 그는 사회주의자로서 사회주의를 바로잡으려 했고, 좌파로서 좌파를 바로 잡으려 했으며, 지식인으로서 지식인을 바로 잡으려 했다. 그의 싸움은 언제나 우파와 좌파를 향한 두 개의 전선을 가지고 있었다고 보아야 한다.

영어초록

Orwell’s perspective on the contemporary society constituted a unique structure combining anarchism, ethical socialism, and collectivism. Adding conservative attribute to this, his thought is located at some point among the square made of conservatism, anarchism, ethical socialism, and collectivist socialism(CAEC). Each ideology could be seen as a mutually exclusive one if we observe those ideas separately. But these ideas that could be found in Orwell’s complex thought are supporting each other transforming their standardized ideas a little bit. These refracted ideas--conservatism that does not favor the vested interest, anarchism that protests against the pressure inflicted by society, collectivism that stresses the importance of the locality--are all pursuing to find a harmony between individualism and collectivism. But it should be noted that individualism always precedes to collectivism in Orwell’s thought.
Individualism is still not fully realized and even more threatened in the so called democratic society. Also the social phenomena that require the collectivist intervention like the inequality of income and the widening gap between the poor and the rich are still existing nowadays. Considered in these points, Orwell’s thought could be interpreted as holding a sense of reality although it has some limits in the matter of imperialism.
Orwell criticized the contemporary socialists although he professed himself to be a socialist. He endeavored to correct the socialism as a socialist. He attempted to correct the left, the intelligentsia, and the patriots. Although he was criticized by the left, he wanted to remain a socialist and a left and he did not give up the title of an intelligentsia and a patriot. He struggled against all these forces in his own position. In spite of the abuses by the right it should not be forgotten that his fight always had two front lines facing the left and the right.
