초록

MugeukDaejonggyo, originated from Jeongyeok by Gim Hang better known as Gim Il-bu and his chanting-dance meditation called yeonggamudo, is a typical sect of ethnic religion of Southern School I n Korea. Mental practice and chanting-dance meditation are two significant ways of meditation in MugeukDaejonggyo.
Gim Hang(Il-bu) taught Oeumju(五音呪) meditation(a pentatonic mantra meditation) which he was conveyed from Lee Un-gyu, to his followers as the mean to survive from inevitable disasters at the approach of Later Heaven. Chanting pentatonic syllables of gung-sang-gak-chi-wu which signify the principle of five elements with performing ritual movement of dancing canel evate one’s abilities that are necessary to stabilize and train his body and spirit. An othername for Oeumju meditation is “yeonggamudo” and South School of Gim Hang(Il-bu) sect was called yeonggamudogyo. Mugeuk Daejonggyo worshipping Gim Hang(Il-bu) as their founder is currently located below Mai mountain in Jinan-eup Jinan-gun north Jeolla province.
Hong Seong-jun, the 7thleader of MugeukDaejonggyo explains the process of yeonggamudo as following: Yeong(詠) signifies the sound of gung(宮), ga(歌) represents octatonic sound, and mudo means a short, fast chanting. Yeonggamudo is both dancing and singing that ther hythm of yulleo, the order of he aven and earth, is manifested and actualized. In this perspective, yeonggamudo can be described as the link that connects celestial yulleo and terrestrial yulleo. Yeonggamudo revised by Gim Il-bu is the meditation rooted in new concept of the principle of five elements and yulleo, and is engaged with the theory of Early Heaven and Later Heaven of JeongYeok.
Chanting pentatonic syllable of Yeonggamudo meditation in MugeukDaejonggyo enables one possessing the same mind with spirits as well as the oneness of heaven and humanity, and allows one to cultivate his mind and improve his blood stream. There is no doubt that yeonggamudo, chanting-dance meditation, embodies two different kinds of healing effect of music and dance in current terms. So to speak, Yeonggamudo is significant not only as the mean of meditation but also the artistic way of healing, thus yeonggamudo will provide great influence to unite mind, body and spirit of people today.
Hence, it is very desirable to spread out yeonggamudo widely to deliver people from immorality and devastation of mind and body. It is also appropriate to preserve yeonggamudo and restore its original form by analyzing and generalizing its special characteristics. It is time to endeavor to raise up the spirits of Korean and globalize ourselves through Yeonggamudo of MugeukDaejonggyo as one of ethnic religions in Korea.
